NZR-Help with my new BT Highway - long winded......

Sorry for using the 300ZX forum like my local dixons help desk but if any techys out there can help me I'd be muchos grateful.

Got home to find that the BT man had been and gone and left me the BT Highway thingy.

Those tight ar**S at BT didn't even leave me a manual. Well I found the on-line one which may as well have been In Japanese.

Now the thing is.. I've connected, you read this huh... good.

But I did have a bit of bother, so much for plug and play that was lapelled on my CD Rom that came with it.

I eventually got it working by making a New Internet connection and putting my freeserve dial up info , ie dial up number. and username and password into it.

So now it works, my q. is by dialing into Freeserves number am I paying freeserve??Or am I still on BT Highways plan?

Also my connection speed is 64000bps is this the right speed?

Any help will be most appreciated. THANKS

Connection speed sounds about right (approx double normal speed of twisted wire) - I think I'm right in saying that you pay BT.

Hope this helps

OK dont know about freeserve but I use Onetel. £12.99 a month 0808 friaco (unmetered) access. If its connected then its working (hehe) but make sure you dont have both ports bound to the line (else you pay for the call) with windows 98 the dial up connectoid defaults to single channel ISDN with windows XP is tends to use all available channels.

BT cannot charge for 0808 or 0800 numbers but your ISP can, check terms and conditions with Freeserve.

With Onetel you can bind both lines and connect 128k on surftime but it disconnects you after 3mins (not a prob with isdn as reconnection is instant) I didnt tell you about that Onetel trick btw wink.gif

Ill post onetel's cust serv # if u want, they aint bad, carry most newsgroups, no blocked ports etc..

BTW dont use USB it plays havoc with the powersupply on PC's (recognised fault apparently)

Need anymore help just shout!

Glenn andRoy,

Thanks for the input guys.

Glenn,

I'm using Win 98 with USB. I thought BT Highway was unmetered access so why do I need to go through Freeserve?

Apologies for my ignorance but never had this sort of service before.

Cheers for the help guys.

I will contact Freeserve via there help number and guess what its 50p/minute and i'm sure they get you talking for ages.......

My advice is not to assume BT Highway is a unmetered set up. It is a digital connection but does use phonelines (unlike cable modem) and therefore counts a phone call!

If you are using Freeserve Friaco - which is to say their surftime deal, then you should have an 0808 or 0800 on your dial up connectoid in dial-up networking. If not you are probably paying for the call. That will get expensife mate! Stay away from all the BT deals imho a load of shite as a company, provider and employer. Just use their equipment to connect to a surftime providing ISP and dont pay more than £12.99/month - no call charges.

Hope this helps (and I can send you an ISDN terminal adapter at cost if you want to connect to the ISDN box properly LOL)

CheerZ Glen mate,

You just made my mind up for me, I was looking at OneTel as I agree...BT are arse and I can say that, coz I worked for them on Y2K...shambles!!! wink.gif

George m8,

Home highway is not Free, its 'kin expensive, 2wice or 3rice price of standard BT line,

get yerself signed up with someone like metronet.co.uk for an 0800 number

Yea 64 is right 128 if using both lines

Tim

Tim,

I signed up to BT SurfTime I didn't want this SH*T!!

They said they had to come and install it? I went with it to find I've been sold a F$$KING expensive system that is useless for me.

The sales person totally mislead me on this. Got the documents to prove it, it says BT Surf Time not Highway. I've signed nothing. So gonna do phone calls to them tomorrow. Not happy with BT at all.

I'll try your suggestion once I sort this out.

Thanks M8

Good ol' rip-off Blightey strikes again! mad.gif

Are we all part of a global experiment or something? Like a bunch of Lemmings that have been bred on this god forsaken Island to be shit on from great heights by a higher force???

Fucks me off!

Soon we'll be paying to get our mail delivered in the mornings when we've had that privelege for how long???

Privatisation? Keep it!!! It's overated and complete ARSE!!!
