Is there a bearing between input shaft & crankshaft???

Hi, does anyone know if there is supposed to be a bearing between the input shaft on a manual box & the crank because it looks like the input shaft just sits into the crank with no bearing which I find rather strange. My car is making a a squealing noise which I put down to the thrust bearing but now I've found that there is quite a bit of play in the input shaft, is this normal? I'm confused by it all!!!!

Any advice would be welcome.

Cheers,

Shaun
