PTU's - How much?

Hey all. Ok firstly i had another post on this page. Basically i've been told that my coils may have been burnt due to a bad ptu by some helpful chaps on this forum :) What basically happened woz that one coil in particular would keep burning out. By putting another one in, in this process another one got burnt and then another in the same coil area. I got told in the end by the mechanic that one of the wires must be shortcircuiting. He checked the wires the other day and hes saying that it must be the ignition control. This is where i come to a problem.

1) Do you guys think it is still the PTU causing the burnt coils?

2) Could the ignition control be a possibilty? If so how much?

3) Any recommendation where to purchase a PTU from?

4) What PTU do i need? I have a 300zx TT G reg import.

Thanks for all the help so far guys, very much appreciated :)

Thats a feature on it....a link from andyp's site...theres loadsa good stuff on there...

I think PHNW (Petrol Heads North West)does the series 2 PTU and harness at a good price ;)

He used to be a trader on here....

If you email me or post your email address I can send you a link to his site :D

(not sure if i should post it)

Very helpful link, thanks. Ok can i slap a PTU series 2(Coz there better obviously) onto my Z? My email address is Lonewolf179@hotmail.com Is it hard to put this onto the engine?

Its about £160

It will fit...with the wire harness...(I havn't fitted one)

It is a good idea to switch to the series 2 PTU as it is a better build/construction with a lower failure rate.

I dont know if your problem is the PTU or not but this is just info on the PTU.

I will send you the link now and you can read the info on the web site :nana2:

Thanks Black Magic, im usually down rickmansworth in hertfordshire wid a blue ZX if u seen me about, otherwise i live in west london.

No probs bud....you got email

lol...I used to work in Hertford but now work in west london... :D

Havnt seen any blue ones about....might see you on the M25 sometime :D

Dodge,

Right I am sure you are going the wrong way with the PTU, when you posted this the other day I reccomended the coil pack connectors where checked to ensure the correct 3 wire connection was been made as if the wrong way around the coil pack will most certainly burn out very quickly.

First check the facts

1) The 12V power supply to feed the coil pack is ignition controlled via a relay in the engine bay fuse/relay box on the n/s inner wing.

2) The ptu output signal is designed as a trigger signal only

3) Coil packs continue to operate even when the connector is the wrong way around

4) Your car runs but burns out coil packs

Given that the ptu output current is too low to burn the coil pack out without burning its self out then discount that, that leaves one of the following causes.

The coil packs are either connected wrongly ( I know they have been checked)

A wiring fault is evident across the coil pack supply and trigger cables

The alternator output is excessively high voltage ( doubt this though)

My view is some of the coil packs are getting a constant 12v+ volt feed to the trigger circuit, this will burn them out as it overloads them.

Some simple tests whilst the ignition is on without the engine running and then with the engine running using a test meter should find this quickly, do appreciate your guy is doing his best,if you want get him to call me and will walk him through the test proceedure.

Hope that hleps

Hey Jeff, appreciate the input bud. I saw my mechanic and he said it aint the fact that the connectors are in the wrong way. I may get a phone call arranged as i don't want to be wasting money on a ptu if i dont need one.

Basically heres other things i can tell u:

1) Once a new coil was inserted the car would run jus like new, but then it would burn out like 10-15 minutes later.

2) The mechanic said there must be a shortcircuit in a wire in the loom and concluded it was the ptu.

3) Ever since i have bought the car(2 years ago) a few times i have had the problem of when trying to start it, it wont start but make a loud ehhhhh noise. But then trying to start it second time it would work. Possibly related with ptu?

4) Alternator had been recently reconditioned.

5) I have a 90 Zed import Japan Twin Turbo Auto

So wot u reckon?

Dodge,

Ok try this as a test, trace back the trigger wire to the ptu and cut it at the ptu end, now connect a new cable and run to the coil pack connector, now remove the 12 + and earth cable at the connector end and run a new earth ( to a local point will be fine, run a piggy back cable for the 12 v from the coil pack next to the faulty one.

Observe the cable connections to be sure that the 12+ volts and earth is correctly connected, if this cures your fault then it was a connection or cable fault, if it does not there is a bloody spook in your machine and it needs getting rid of!

No seriously, faults like this sometimes get like a personal crusade that you MUST win, and sometimes it stops you seeing the wood for the tree`s.

This will be something that when you have it sorted will be something so small it will be annoying that it causes so much grief.

Can speak with your garage if it will help, can fax them info and more tests to try also if it will help
