Should the cog on the right turn without any power?....as i cant get it to move either way.

The main setup all turns and moves freely now after I have greased and lubed the shaft

Reason being that it just clicks and throws the cog out when I go to start and the SMotor is getting very warm so I reckon the powers getting their.

I have checked all my connections and are now good.

Thanks peeps :hyper:

...how old's the cars battery? I had the same once and it turned out to be the battery was failing. I'd removed the starter motor - pulled it apart and re-built it (relatively easy to do) and the starter would still jump into gear then out again, without trying to turn the engine.

Everything pointed at the starter - or so I thought, as I'd assumed a poor battery would have just turned the engine slowly. No so - these clever Japanese have it that the stsrter won't engage if there's not enough power to turn the engine.

Good luck

Hello jack...

I have one of those batterys with the LED on the top to tell you if its charged or not...

And its showing bright green to say its fully charged

I will test it tonight with a voltage tester and see if it says any different but I reckon its ok.

Thanks for the idea bud ;)

might be fully charged but is there enough cranking amps? IIRC our Z's needed a pretty high cranking ampage.

Is there anyway I can check the cranking ampage as opposed to just the level of the battery please?

I know a good battery should read about 13.1 volts and a brown bread one would read about 12v...

Thanks

I don't know the answer re amps, but how old's the battery. If it's 3 years old, you've got to be looking at a new one soon... Only speaking from experience... Can you borrow a good (known) battery from another car just to test the poor-battery theory?

Thats a simple idea I never even thought of....CheerZ bud...

I dont know how old the battery is as I've only had the car 6months....it looks fairly new but then batterys always do dont they :(

Yes, but don't try with a multimeter :D

To measure the current drain, the meter would have to be in circuit with the starter - i.e. all of the starting current would need to flow through the meter.

You'd need a serious meter for that, with some very chunky wires ;)

I have now checked the battery and its holding about 13 to 13.1v...

The proof is in the pudding...

Only time will tell...

I wont count my chickens...

With thanks to AndyZ ;) I have sourced a starter motor and got delivered today and then I fitted it tonight.

It works now

So it must of been a burnt out motor :wack:

But its back now :D
