IT bods :D

My BT Broadband tinternet keeps clicking off. It just says "No signal" every now and then and I have to wait til my little arrows icon goes green ;) and reconnect.

Sometimes it's fine for ages then other times it chucks me off the tinternet every couple of minutes.

Is there any way I can find out what's wrong with speaking to Delhi's finest phone operatives? ;)

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete

Try uninstalling it and re-install , if its not that , it,s more than likely the modem , if your phone is working ok , you will get a new one free if bt supplied it , hope this helps mate

if its a speedtouch 330 it should be opk, it will take a lightning strike in your area to take that out .. if its a voyager modem then bin it and get either a speedtouch or a router modem, much better.

also if your on a 2mb cnx then that may be the problem as shitty bt lines arent made and cant handle the 2mb cnxns period too much data over that crappy 8k copperline..

also right click your connection icon and goto properties/options and on the idle time bfore hangup bar select never

also do a spyware check the usual stuff.. if your still not getting anywhere let me know.

also you can improve data transmission and recieving , you can goto broadband reports.com run the tweak and speed tests and then use drtcp to alter the mtu, packet etc settings in xp and you can sometimes get .8 of a mb speed boost, for ex: 1 mb becomes 1.8mb 2mb becomes 2.8mb

Not puting down any of the info above, either phone BT up and get them to do a line check, or if you can get on line long enougth, go to BT.Com and perform a line check that way. If there is a problem it'll tell you were it is, either Exchange, Line, Outside equipment (BT) or internal equipment (yours), at least you'll know one way or another.

HTH

Incidentley, I've got the BT Voyager, never had a problem with it yet!! :D

Yeah its a Voyager, any diagnostic I do whilst it is working just tells me it is working :D

Seems more like a crap line but the phone is always fine. I'll swap the filters round :)

If not, I'll go down pk1's tech route :D:bow: I aint phoning no call centre :nono:

Cheers

read on Tiscali site (help! pages) that some motherboards do not provide enough power to USB port so if u have external modem there is no cure (apart from internal ADSL modem).

Your ISP should have this info.

i'm on bt too. not the broad band though and i've ad a few probs later. keeps disconecting have to try two or three times to conect. say's the line is busy.

dont help you out, but you no it's not just you.

You could use a powered USB HUB

Some of the BT supplied modems are notoriously shite, specifically the 'clam shell' ones. If yours is one of those then I'd suggest getting a new one from a reputable manufacturer.

you can ring bt and get them to do a line test however you can also ask for an enginners test and report, this is called a wish test it checks the feed from the main exchange to all secondary exchange routers to your homne connection, these are tested in sequence by two engineers. the report will tell you how much data falloff there is between each mid exchange and the main exchange and a final exchange to home falloff report, you will be surprised as to how much data you actually lose over even the smallest distance.

i would suggest to you that you buy a decent ethernet/router modem these are much more reliable and have their own psu.

also goto broadband reports website and run the tweak/speed tests there in the mean-time. see what you ping, aks, mtu and packets are like, it will more than likely show a slow connection.

if you still not sure copy the test log and post here and i will tell you how to alter the settings in drtcp.

bear in mind adsl is analogue to digital coversion run down a crappy 8k copper line that isnt made for it, then into several mid exchanges before reaching you main exchange where it has to be reconverted and boosted for traffic passing to the bt servers.

one of these days.. it will be optical lines, then it wont be 2mb lines more like 1gig lines.. but by the time bt do this.. we will all be in a museum with our zeds..

Do away with the USB modem totally. Get an Ethernet one if you can...
