Wd40? can be a pretty safe way of cleaning off gunk without scratching. Remember your rear lens conversion?

Been there, done that........

I bought a cheap hand held steam cleaner, not that effective though :nelson:

ended up scraping off with a piece a thin plastic (as per wallpaper stripper)

I agree WD40 is probably best, you could also try some panel wipe. To rub it off use a dry tea towel, if you rub hard enough the cloth of the towel will create an abrasive effect and it won't damage the paint. You'll know if you're rubbing hard enough because the tea towel will be ruined.

i used a some isopropyl the non mineral kind, then i used some..very cheap bathroom moose foam and let it soak for a while then scrubbed the bugger clean, as for the black rubber gunk i used a brand new stanley blade on its edge at a fine angle, and gently removed the crap bit by bit, then when i got to a section that was left i just scrubbed it off with the moose and off it came..

as it has to be filled and resprayed you could use one of those foam backed kitchen pads with the green scratchy bit on the back to remove the stubborn crap, if your getting the lid painted etc it wont matter about some light surface scratching.

mines done and ready for painting and hole filling

legrath are you gonna go for the tailgate skin from the z centre or go smooth with the perspex panal...just wondering as i was considering doing the same but was concerned about the fitment of the skin and how much of a lip there would be ect

I was going for the tailgate skin, but yeh it seems there are fitment issues, but I have a certain spoiler in mind now, and Im happy to go with perspex panel with that spoiler.

Sticky stuff remover from the betterware catalogue...

i kid you not....excellent stuff!

Failing that, some glue & tar remover.

Swan lighter fluid is what you need ;)

looked much better on :wack:

would look much better red also

Yeah, and as it's black, then you could light it :x: :D  and buy a RED one!!! You know it makes sense ;)

As for the segestions regarding gentley getting rid of the sticky gunk, whats it matter, it's got to go to the bodyshop to be sorted anyway :D

Good luck with it mate

Thats what I've used for taking all gunk off paintwork, as long as u dont let it sit on the paintwork for more than about 20 seconds then it works wonders for glue / gunk / tar if u heat it first / and bugs.... cos i cant imagine a bug htting a front bumper at 100+ mph is easy to remove

Out of interest, how many holes are the in the tail gate skin after you've removed it that need filling and painting and what do you do with the brake light. My spoiler is fooked, all cracked and soking up water (very comon I hear) ?

There are 6 holes in the top, and 1 or 2 at the back. All are about pencil thickness in diameter. Plus there is the big slot where the brake light went into.

You can buy the perspex panel from zcentre with or without brake light that covers up the slot and 2 holes at the back.
