Having wondered the eternal question of 'how many zeds are out there', I decided to give the DVLA a try.

They sent me to the DfT, and a nice man there (Mike Dark) kindly looked it up on the computer.

These figures are for all models - i.e. anything that matched 300zx.

So here's the figures as at the end of March:

4601 originally registered

1659 still registered (including mine that's still with Ryan - hint hint)

691 with a SORN

461 between keepers - they don't know yet if they're scrapped, SORN or 'under new management'.

He reckons for their age, it's about average for the amount scrapped.

That's 2942 dead zeds

No wonder you don't see many on the roads then!

does that include imports?

and waht about all the imports registered as nissan micras lol :D (it does happen)

and does that mean that there are only 507 legally on the road at the moment?

(1659-691-461)

and these would include the Z31 too ? (that would explain the high number scrapped)

my import is'nt registered as 300zx. Its just down as Nissan. With the model bit blank.

Funny you should say that. When I put my private plate on the original was found to be an Escort mexico??????? :nono:

It got sorted eventually tho'. and I am sure mine was included in the list of NON-SCRAPPED. :nana2:

SORN are still registered, just not supposed to be on the road. The between keepers may or may-not be, so I suppose that there should be no more than 968 on the road.

It will include imports, if they've been registered as properly.

Anything that is registered as a Nissan 300zx is included. That's 2+2, Turbo, Auto the lot.

I did mention to him the range '90 to '99, but I think he just did the lot. That way you'd get recent imports.

my subaru wrx ra was registered as a subaru justy !! Well cheap insurance though !! LOL

Nope. not a Fairlady amongst them. If it's not a 300zx, it's not in the numbers.

If you want any specifics, i.e. your model, year, colour. Try ringing Mike Dark - 02079446386.

A very nice man, who will dig out the info and phone you back after half an hours wait.

I think he's part of the press office or some such. It seems to be his job to answer this type of question. Maybe I should have thought more about what exactly I was asking for, but I got caught off guard by getting through first time. :)

My import is registered as a '2 axle rigid body coupe', so you can add 1 to the number of zeds still on the road. :p

What an unsualy helpful man at the Dept For Transport. Big up Mike Dark.

Normally when I try and get information out of these sorts of places there's just a wall of apathy and transfering to other departments.

Unfortunately, he's only got wrong figures to work from. The base data entered by DVLA offices for imports are almost never right. Some (old and out of date) background and analysis is here

so if there is so little still on the roads (whatever the number) why dont they hold their price, As so many people who talk about them say what a great car they are

I suspect that there are quite a few that aren't registered as 300zx. Probably Jap imports. As Gio mentioned, the proportion of imports is quite high, so these figures could be well off.

Makes me wonder why I bothered now :slap:

Even if it was treble the figure, it would still mean that fewer than 1 in 15,000 cars on the road is a zed. :p
