ok guys aany help will be much appreciated on this :

I went out this evening for my normal sunday cruise, all was going well until I pulled off from a set of lights there was a vibration type feeling (had the tunes up so didnt hear any noise)which i put down to a little tyre slip as i was a bit enthusiastic off the lights then this noise which sounded like a metallicy exhaust blowy/raspy kind of noise(technical term there) but also maybe a rotating sort of rubbing.

As I accelerated the noise got quicker, slowed down it got slower - no noticeable lack of power just the noise getting louder.

Stopped under a street light revved the engine in park no noise just exhaust roar???

had a look underneath -nothing hanging down, no obvious leaks????

opened the bonnet - nothing to see (apart from the norm)

Tried reversing - noise is there

WTF is going on!!!!!!! please any ideas??? this is my daily driver so a fooked without it

Will have a better look in daylight but has anyone got any idea as to what it can be

thanx in advance

Propshaft support bearing broken up?

Jeff TT

Need to get under the car, towards the diff, take a hold of the propshaft as close to the front of the car as you can reach and see if there is excess play still looking to the front of the car, try looking down the propshaft from the rear you can see over the top of the cat top cover to where the support bearing is located and see if the rubber donut shaped support has broken up.

If a new item is required then the rear section of exhaust 14mm bolts /nuts/hangers and top cat shield need removing, the later pulls back after 6 x 10 nuts and 2 x 10mm bolts are removed.

Access now enables you to undo the support bearing 2 x17mm bolts, make a note of how the two bolt spacers are located between the chassis and the mounting bracket they must be replaced the same way.

Mark the two sections of propshaft at the centre connection, this is to enable you to refit in the same place and ensure balance.

Undo the 4 x17mm propshaft bolts at the centre connection, the two parts will seperate, remove the front section from the rear of the gearbox this has the bearing carrier attached to it, if the car is level no oil should come out of the gearbox however if it is very steeply jacked at the front a little may leak, if so make provision to catch this.

Once the propshaft is removed the old bearing requires removal, firstly the centre nut 1 x 27mm needs undoing, this can be difficult without an air gun and a few attempts may be required, no need to keep the old nut as a new one comes with the kit

Once undone the flance needs driving off with a few taps from a hammer, there is a copper washer that fits between the flance and bearing holder, no neeed to keep it a new item is with the new bearing, however do remember the order the parts come off in so refiting is correct.

The bearing is pressed on and will need some very heavy blows to remove with a hammer ( not the best way) personally I use an air chisel, maybe a local garage could drive it off for you.

Once the old bearing is off replace with new item been careful to fit the correct way around, tap down gently with a hammer, it will not go all the way down yet, add the copper washer then the flange, and again tap down gently.

Add the new nut and tighten, this will pull the bearing and flange to the correct point.

There is one last task before refitting to the car, the shaft has a small indent section, you must peen over the nut into this so as to act as a safety to prevent the nut working loose.

Replacing the propshaft on the car is straight forward, just remember to get the prop lined up as previously fitted and the bearing support spacers in the correct place between the bracket and the chassis.

Hope that helps.

TIP: It is easy to have the car out of gear to rotate the propshaft when undoing, however when trying to reinsert the propshaft into the gearbox it is better to have it in gear to help locate the splines.

and how easy to fix?????

Fookin hell  reading the above not that easy. But thats a spot on guide. ;)

you make that sound easy jeff not as bad as i thought gonna be doing mine shortly as ive got vibration at around 40 -70 mph ive had all the wheels balanced twice and its still there am i right ???

it is easy ;)

Just a small point to add while I remember it, a general prop-bearing thing!

When my propshaft bearing went I had vibration between 30-70mph, but every time the car was jacked up it would flex the chassis & drivetrain in a particular way such that when I drove the car again afterwards the vibration would be minimal. After a day or so I'd have the bad vibes back again!

Got very confused getting my wheels rebalanced- thought "it's cured it, oh no it hasn't!" Wasn't helped by the garage actually not balancing one of the wheels right on one occasion... thought I was going mad!

I put it down to the centre UJ being a bit stiff.

Er, so in summary, the vibe can come and go...

:)
