Spent the afternoon making up a rough wire armature for the custom dash. Layed up the inside with tape, (which I'll coat with a releasing agent) leaving a few hopefully well sited holes to inject the expanding foam. I'll angle it round to face the driver a bit more before I do though. It should leave me with a good base to sculpt onto, fingers crossed! ;) Still got to make up ones for the passenger screen and the centre channel so they all flow "organically" into one another. Also got to cut back the plastic cowl over the clocks and the plan is to cut out the mountings for the control pods either side and mount them flush to the dash so they don't obscure the view (ideally I'd like to get rid of them completely and resite the controls but I think it may be a bit beyond my abilities to re-do the electrics). Really hope this all works! Lol! ;) :D

Cheers guys...I think! ;) :D TBH, it does look a bit of an abortion at the moment (to nick a certain Mr Dixon's phrase :D) but hopefully it'll turn out to plan. As me old nan used to say, you can't make an omlette without breaking a few eggs :D Trouble is, I've now started eyeing up the back seats for complete removal with a view to remodelling that area when I do the boot...somebody stop me fer chrissakes! Lol! :D

*throws spanner in*

At the moment, it looks rather like the (erm, fugly) Supra dash...

I'm sure it'll look better when it's done ;)

Lol! I quite like the Supra dash! :x: :D But seriously, it should look different when it's done *offering up silent prayers to multiple deities as I type* :D

when its done you ought to get somebody to price up doing a batch, I can see a GB on custom dash's now. and b4 anybody says it wouldnt be original - it would if they are all slightly different (colours, clocks, position etc)

cant wait to see it finished should be cool as.

I had the same idea matey...;) I'm planning on taking a female mould of it all when it's finished...if it all works out! :D

Well, there's been a bit of progress since I last posted. My first attempt which involved filling a make shift mould with expanding foam sort of worked although it was very rough:

In the end I decided I didn't like the shape and that it would be better to build a wire armature, stretch fabric over it, soak it in activated resin then fibreglass and filler over the top. It's still very rough and very much a work in progress but I'm happier with the shape, and importantly it fits in the car! A hole for the screen needs to be cut out in the swept centre console (it will be recessed into it to avoid glare...I'll use resin'd fabric again to make the sides of the hole flow into the screen and the same method on the passenger side screen). TBH I may end up scrapping it and making another though, I'll see how it goes.

Lol! I know the feeling! ;) I looked like I'd been attacked by a bag of flour the other day, the bloody stuff gets everywhere...and I mean EVERYWHERE! Always wanted to get into designing/making bodykits myself...are you building from scratch or modifying an existing one mate? I'm currently dreading doing the doorbuilds!

Lol! That sounds like three weeks of fun to me! Reckon he'll notice there's no tread left on the tyres when he comes back? ;) Thanks for the offer of help mate, it's really appreciated, I may just take you up on it! ;) I'm going to town on the interior as she's been taken up as a showcar for Bodywork Plus (a trader on here) and between the two of us we're turning the Zed into a bit of a beast...totally custom inside and out with a damn great V8 powering the lot! :D Is that your business then? Never really looked at buggies before and some of those in the Gallery look madder than a bag of badgers! Nice!

Kin ell, i bet you get as high as a kite in there at the mo :D:D

Cant wait to see the finished article bud

I'd love to have the skill to do that mate! I always look at people like yourself and Steve (Bodywork Plus) and wish I could do the same kind of stuff! I'm an artist for my sins (no steady income but I enjoy it!) and although I mostly get commissioned for paintings these days I used to do a lot of sculpture and installation/film work so although I'm not used to using fibreglass it's kind of similar in a way...always get a buzz seeing something take shape!

i will be keeping my eye on this

LMAO! Got something in common with your wife then as I'm from there as well! :D And the years of electro shock therapy did wonders in eliminating any trace of my "Brummie twang"...:D ;)
