Anyone near Preston , A company called Chill Out based in Leyland - pretty much a one man band, but I phoned him at 2:30pm and he said come round at 6:30pm - Re-gassed the car with an R12 drop in replacement with dye for leak checks, took 30mins and charged £65. Air con back to working well again.

He didnt say what the gas was exactly, just it was a blend of a few gases, but he did say that he puts in a bit less than the R12 weight stated on the sticker for the car as it runs a slightly higher pressure. If the sticker is lost then I can look it up for you. I told him I'd mention him on the web site so he should offer you £65 for the job, he vacuumed the system first to remove any moisture and old gas and then charges it back up. He's more than happy to talk to if you have any Q's then drop him a line.

I doubt it will be R12.

 

What they do now is put a new gas in R22 I think it is, but because our pumps are not compaible for that chemical another chemical is added to help. Its something to do with the pressure it needs to be at to cooler efficenently. The extra chemical makes the R22 (if that is what it is) less viscous.

 

This can cause problems as R12 didnt have to run as high pressure to work but this chemical makes it run a higher pressure.

 

There have been cars that have split pipes and seals breaking because of the increase pressure, but I think the Zs air con system is more than strong enough to take it as I have not heard of one having trouble after it.

 

This is what I think he is going to do. I researched it quite a lot a few months ago.
