The saga continues....

After only 200 miles of ownership my nice shiney yellow '90 JAP TT decided to blow a big end.

Baggins duly replaced it, got it running, only to discover that the head gasket has gone. :headvswal

Baggins swore. :nono:

Baggins has now set off on another round of rip it all out, and replace whatever's left. :(

The problem is, I'm getting a bit paranoid about overheating, as i don't want to go through all this lot again. The stock gauge showed no sign of overheating even when it blew the top rad hose up like a balloon.

So, zed gods, I'm after any advice on aftermarket gauges - what to look for/avoid etc.

It's almost completely stock, and will probably remain so for a while - if that has any bearing on the matter.

Speak to chrisgreddy, he'll be able to sort the gauges/pods

for ya, always a good idea to run an aftermarket gauge/s

aswell as the originals, they are notoriously shite!

Yep, get an aftermarket water temp gauge, chris does do some nice ones and while you're at it get a aftermarket oil pressure gauge and oil temp gauge ....

 and a nice Koyo Rad wouldn't go a miss....

Again speak to chris

I was shocked at the difference in readings between stock and aftermarket dials

For example.

When the aftermarket was reading 60ºC, stock was reading just below middle.

When the aftermarket was reading 70ºC stock was reading middle

When the aftermarket was reading 80ºC stock was reading middle

When the aftermarket was reading 90ºC stock was reading middle

When the aftermarket was reading 100ºC stock was reading middle

When the aftermarket was reading 110ºC and the fan was on stock was reading middle.

I have had the stock gauge tested and its working and it has a new sensor on it. :(

Thanks for that.

I was aware that stock gauges were bad, but not quite in the chocolate teapot league!

Right then it's water temp, oil pressure and oil temp for me. As for oil pressure, I know electrical would be easier to fit, but do the senders suffer the same problems as the stock ones. i.e may or may not work depending on which side of bed they get out of?
