Hi,

Just wanted to know what the minimum legal tyre tread depth is?

Cheers

1.6mm over 3/4 of the tread, 1mm for motor cycle,

i think

1.6mm over the CENTRAL 3/4's of the main tread pattern. the outer edges may be devoid of tread but must obviously have no cords exposed!!

Havnt you got to still have visible tread outside the central 3/4?

stick a 20p coin in the groove, if it stays its legal, if it dont its shagged!!

Seriously tho, I believe the LEGAL limit is 1.6 mm over 3/4 of the tyre.

But to pass an MOT test they have to be 2 mm or more.

The tread indicators on a tyre are at 2mm.

no, not any more - that was the regs about 10-15 years ago!

Shows how long ago it was when I was an MOT tester!!!

1.6mm minimum depth on the central three quarters of the treaded width.

Visible tread on the rest.

That's what I thought - for cars anyway.

Pretty close to what the lads are saying.

YEEHAA!!

I was right then!!

Life in the old dog yet!!

direct from the testers manual:

Reason For Rejection:

the grooves of the tread pattern are not at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising

  • the central 3/4s of the breadth of tread, and
  • round the entire outer circumference of the tyre

Note: each side of the central band of the tyre can be devoid of tread (ie "bald") and still meet the pass standard

thankyou ;)
