SAAB 9-5 HOT Aero? That's the one with the 250BHP turbo engine!

I am seriously contemplating getting one before I get drawn but to a Z. I seriously need practicality ATM but I am finding it hard to keep away from the Z's. I have heard nothing but good things about the SAAB's but what do you guys think about them?

I mainly intereseted in knowing about their reliability and drivability.

Cheers

:D well now the cat is out the bag so to speak ;) I have just bought a SAAB 9-3 Vector convertable 2.0 ltr Turbo, which with the Heirch conversion will be in that region Cos :D

A foooking great looking motor :D

yep i like saabs even the 93 LCT is quick! fookin mad torque understeer though :D

stop kidding yourself and buy another zed!! :D

I know it makes sense Mark but I have to think about the real sense this time. Do you honestly think that I would prefer a SAAB over a Z. Unfortunately I'm having to go with the "Needs Must" rather than the "Wants Must".

Back to the car though, I've heard that there is a high pressure version of the 9-5 Hot Aero but I'm yet to see one. Figures of 400BHP are being claimed.????

If it's the one i'm thinking of it has front wheel drive and lots of torque steer. As for reliability they are fairly new cars so should not be a problem. 250bhp from a FWD is on the limit of driveability IMO.

Homebrew - I'd probably agree with you but it cant be any worse than the old vauxhall astras and cav. They are proper crap for under steer and not keeping the power down.

What really impresses me with the SAABs is the level of spec for the money! The SE spec has air con perforated leather seats. Flash or what?

I know i will get a bashing for saying this, but its a good choice, i have had a few in the past as family cars, not a toy like my Z, cos thats all it is to me.

The best Saab i had was the 1991 2.3 9000 CARLSSON (225Bhp standard), that was one fast family car. Fitted with larger I/C, induction kit, chipped ecu, Lowerd/uprated suspension, big 18" wheels. If you go to saab for the servicing/parts they can be very expensive, but there are plenty of others around.

All the bolt on goodies are available at ver good prices, my big I/C cost less than £300.

My last company car was an aero 95 turbo and If you need a fast family car go for it, allday long at 140mph and you will think you are sitting on your soffa in doors (get a DVD in dash/ headrest screens for the kids, they will luv it).

left this to last, there is a down side ? IMHO the standard suspension is crap, ok if you like BOATS, nuff said.

Last but not least, when you listen to the engine running listen very closely to the front of the engine, if you hear any tinkling/tapping noise forget that one get another, will be a very expensive repair £1500 + but if you diy less than £200.

If you can buy one private do it and save a fortune, just make sure it has full S/H, But u allreadty know all that , get a silver one with all the toys ?. DO IT.

Cheers Baz - I have found an auto with 50k and with leather. FSSH and in good nick. Am viewing it on Wed. It's booking at £8700 but this one is going for £6700. I get the feeling they generally sell for cheaper than they book due to them not being the first choice for a luxury motor even though like you say, they have got an amazing spec.

Should be good, looking forward to it!

Thanks again.

When I visited our lift supplier in Sweden last year, the MD picked me up from the airport in his modded 9-5 which put out 300bhp.

That was a fekking mental motor, the mid-range grunt was actually better than a stock ZX IMO (some versions of the 9-5 could out perform a Porsche 996 from 50-70 IIRC)

He had modded the suspension to cope with the extra horses though - an awesome motor never the less.

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

stop kidding yourself and buy another zed!! :D

Ditto Fook the Sub & the Sab :D

i used to work for saab and the 95 High Output Turbo is possibly the most reliable they did have a problem with 5th gear but a used one has probably been done and now they are part of GM you can get most parts from vauxhall at a little less cost than saab also they had a small problem with the oil seperator wich just needed whipping off and a larger hole drilled into it hth

Cheers guys

My Bro has two 9-5's one's his and the other he bought for his Mrs. His has performance ECU which pushes his to about 250 BHP I think. It's a lovely motor and very quick.

I've had a Saab 900 T16S years ago and at 185,000 miles it was still spot on. Never had a problem with it apart from a few bulbs blowing.

Saab's are b100dy good motors IMO.

I got a SAAB 9-5 outside mine. It belongs to my dad but theres a few things wrong with it so he left it at mine cos im nearer to the garage :)

Must admit it does look nice but prefer the boyfriends z ;)
