Next on my list of jobs to do is an oil change. I have bought some Mobil 1 5w-50 fully synthetic oil and a new filter. What I want to know is whether it is worthwhile doing an oil change with a 'cheap' mineral oil first to clean the engine out?. I am not sure when the last oil change was done and so I was wondering if doing this intermediate oil change could be beneficial.

I understand the potential problems of using a flushing oil and so I thought that using a cheap oil as a 'flush' could provide some of the benefits with none of the nasties.

If it is beneficial to do this, how long should I run the cheap oil through the engine, 5 minutes or 500 miles!?!

when speaking to the local car parts shop I asked the same thing. He told me to use cheap mineral oil as it does the same job and is better for the engine.

i wouldnt bother personally all IMO dont have a reason i just dont use cheap oil full stop,id rather use a well known oil to flush if i thought the engine benefited from it,why do you want to do it

Ive got some of that thin silkolene oil that I bought (and boy is it thin) not realising just how thin ( look it up on here its thin) so I used that to flush it as its so thin. By the way, if anyone on here is thinking of buying some its really thin ..

Bit of a difference of opinion here but I have always used what the Father-in-law puts in most cars he works on. Its a semi-synth 10w-40 and that's always been good enough for me....

Why pay £25-£50 for oil!?!

i in my mind did it the right way v expensive but a garunteed no problems with mixing oils i did a change to mobil1 then a week later done 200mls changed the whole lot again as halfords was doing a special £27.99 for 4 ltrs

why pay 2k for an engine

IIRC the oilman says use a cheap oil......to flush

dont see the point why put shit through it then put decent in whilst there is still a bit of some crappy multigrade floating around your engine thats why i flush with what im going to run the mota on i dont mix n match but thats probably just me

lol, If my engine was new then I used fully synth, not on a 50K engine I aint.

Greg, I tried that with a different car once, put fully synth oil in and it started rattling all over the place....fVcked it right up!

Guess I've been scarred by that.....

BYB, I have used that oil in my Zed and had no engine probs (everything else has gone wrong, but the engines fine! lol :D ) TOUCH WOOD! :D

I use some cheap stuff from Asda at 2.50 for 5 litres keeps the expensive oil fresher for longer at minimal cost.
