Can anyone give any advice on what to check next to get rid off the red HICAS light on the dash

Its only started coming on the last day or two and is intermittant but mostly on. When I start the Z it's OFF but then comes ON within the first minute or so of driving

I've checked and topped up the Powersteering fluid - no effect

Checked the connector that leads from the Power steering resevoir - looks clean with no green corriosion

Tried doing the HICAS Diags (turning wheel left 20 degress then right etc) - couldn't get this to work at all no matter how many times I tried the wheels would neither twitch or move 1 degree to the left or right.

and while doing the test and driving forward 15ft there was no HICAS fault code

Also does this now mean that with the HICAS light on the dash ON. HICAS is disabled?

If so it doesn't feel any different to normal.

I wonder if its never worked or that my driving skills are so poor that I just can't tell?? :o

Doyou have an after market steering wheel? There is a HICAS sensor under the steering wheel.

There are a heap of posts on the Aussie 300ZX Forum:

http://aus300zx.neuralmotion.com.au/index.cfm

One is from Ben Lippa (Blipman) ans is as follows:

"..........the HICAS 'sensor' on the steering column is just a piece of plastic that sticks out, the steering wheel goes over this piece so that when you turn the wheel it moves with it.For an aftermarket steering wheel to be compatible with HICAS it simply needs to have a hole for this piece of plastic so that when the wheel and boss are turned it moves the HICAS sensor and HICAS knows where the steering wheel is aimed. When the wheels are pointing straight, the sensor MUST be at the bottom. If this is not the case (it's out by about 15 degrees on some boss kits) the car will over time get confused that you are (as far as the HICAS sensor is concerned) constantly turning 15 degrees to the right or left most of the time, and will trigger the light as it thinks something is wrong. Ben"

Might be worth checking the other posts.

Cheers,

Wal

Cheers Yellazed

but mines still got the standard steering wheel

One thing I have noticed now though is if I turn the wheel a full 360 degrees to the right the light comes on nearly everytime??

did you say you have checked for leaks as putting the steering wheel on full lock is the procedure for bleeding the systym,so either there is a leak and its under pressure or the power steering pot is very low why not keep the car on full lock and check fluid that way

Changed the front pads last night as they were really low.

then took a bit of the power steering fluid out with a syringe as it looked a bit high.

Problem has now gone

I'm now Confussed.......... but happy

Cheers 4 the help anyway lads

Mine has come on twice since I ahd the rods replaced both on long journeys. The steering went heavy as a result. I pulled off the motorway, turned her off and on again and it was back to normal. No problems since. I have no answer.

Is the steering wheel centred properly? the system might be detecting an incorrect angle in the hicas sensor
