What was up wit the idle on your car? Mine also idle's poorly? How did you cure it?

Karl

Hi,it just would not idle steady steady at all! I cleaned the throttle boddies and it was fine. If you go onto the thread above u'll find out how to do it and a lot more it's a great site!

Hi David

Thats what many people have told me to do. I will have a go at this tommorow. Mine idles 'lumpy' when hot, almost stalls sometimes. Also, when you sometimes stop at a junction it will stall, always starts fine though. If the aircon is on, then all the idling problems go away.

Thanks

Karl, Have you checked TPS (throttle position sensor) reading. Should be 0.44v (+/- 0.2) ?

Yep thats the same as mine but the air con only lifts the revs not solves the problem! It worked for me just hope it works for you! Also try cleaning the coolant temp sensor may also help.. Once i cleaned the throttle boddies i sprayed carb cleaner through them while the engine was running but make sure not to have anything on top of the engine in case it falls and snaps a belt! Ps before you do all that disconnect the battery and then reconnect it after about half an hour as this will reset the ECU!

Happey cleaning

David

Ok guys

Well now im going to show my ignorence! I will happily take this whole engine to bits and put it back together again, respray the entire car etc etc, as I have with many other cars, but can someone explain quickly where the TPS (throttle position sensor) is. im guessing (of the top of my head) its the sensor on the end of the throttle bar? now I look daft!

attachment.php?attachmentid=810

Little black box, mounted on side of block near throttlebody.

Check its voltage with multimeter. Use earthing point on Battery, and positive probe on middle wire on the TPS connector. A reading of 0.44v +/2 0.02v is expected. It can be adjusted by undoing the screws and changing its angle.

If you have general idle problems, then best to check this guide :

Nice one Legrath,

Up early in the morning and I wont shut the bonnet untill it idles perfectly!!

Thanks for your help!

you cleaned the throttle bodies with the engine running PMSL

No no after u have them cleaned, then spray a drop of carb cleaner through them to wash any residue on through!

Right then guys

Thanks for all your help last night. However......I still have the problem!

Ive done the ecu cose check, code 55 all fine. Cleaned the connectors to the Throttle position sensor, the water temp sensor and the injectors plus the PTU. These were all real bad and green! Cleaned a load of black shoot out of the Throttle housings, and (tried) to clean out the little hole infront of the throttle flap on the bottom of the housing. Im guessing this is what lets a small amount of air through for the idling.

Started the car, let it warm up, aircon off. All fine. Temp guage went to mid way (never goes higher), still all fine. Reved the engine a couple of times (mildly) revs dropped from 3000rpm to about 750rpm then settled at approx 900rpm. Swithched on air con, revs went to approx 1000rpm, all fine, switched air con off, revs dropped...still sounds fine. Left the car running for a further few moments, then the engine revs itself to about 1500rpm, stays there for about 2 seconds and then drops to 600rpm. It then did this again, but worse, upto 1500ish, down to about 400. This kept on happening, the engine almost stalling each time. Wiggled the usual connectors, nothing? If you remove the fan switch, then the revs go right upto about 1500 and the fan comes on.

I thought maybe the throttle housing still wasnt clan enough, so I started removing the right hand side housing, but gave up as there was so many pipes going to it that it looked a nightmare waiting to happen. Its really strange. Driving the car home it wasnt too bad (so long as the air con is on or it stalls at junctions), however out of the blue it started idling at 1300 continuously. After this I parked up and left it!!

What I realy need, expensive mechanics arnt an option at the mo, is someone in the Bristol/wiltshire area thats has some kind of inkling what may be going on. Also they could drive mine and tell me if the think its performing right. Im sure I could do a deal with someone????

Thanks in advance

Karl

there quick enough in standard form the only problem is over time you get use to the power,so you fettle and add a little bit :D so your not bored,i work on zeds for a living its a shame to see some sorry zeds that have had a hard life, there are nice 300s out there,it can be a minefield so be careful, your best bet is to go with someone who knows there zeds

Right then guys

karl phone ryan on 07968166640 he is one of the traders on here under the name z-tech based in wiltshire phone him,he offers free advice and is very helpful, you could even pop over and run a consult on your car to see if there are any faults etc FOC of course

HTH Cheers greg :)

Will do, cheers Greg!

Why buy a zed?

For the money nothing comes close TBH, the GTO looks better IMHO but is even more of a bitch to run. Buy a good one and they are great cars, buy a bad one and you will either need lots of patience or you will be put off them for life very quickly.

They are still Very quick even in todays market and handle pretty well for a big car.

Hi lev,

It's a bit of a catch 22 when deciding on a standard or modified Zx.

If you're lucky to find a well looked after and serviced original then go for it.

Many of the modified ones are not just done out of "bling" , they've also had parts like air filters, ignition units and so on upgraded to make the car a better standard overall.

I'd advise stick on here a couple of weeks before you're purchase, learn as much as you can, and ask as many questions as you like!

And good luck.
