Forum Fresher!

Hi All.

Having followed, with much interest, the posts on this forum for over a year now, I've finally plucked up the courage to introduce myself to you.

My name's Guy and I've owned a Jap spec 91 TT auto for the last two years. It's totally orignal (no mods) and like you I think they're fantastic cars.

I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to you all as well. Whilst I haven't made any posts before, the technical info that you make available both on this forum and on the site has been invaluable - particularly the info about headlight bulbs for imports, fuses (indecipherable before!) and introductions to people like Luke at the z-centre.

The reason that I'm now here is that I'd like to ask a couple of q's...

1. Previously Paul Bailey and ProTech have serviced / worked on my car. However, now I'm in London does anyone know of a realiable specialist in the area who could service / work on the car for me.

2. The temperature gauge needle is slowly going up and down for some reason under normal driving conditions. It goes from the middle of the gauge, sinks to C and then goes back up to the middle again. This cycle takes about 10 mins to complete. Any suggestions as to the cause of this would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers for your help,

Guy

Hi, try cleaning the black connector at the front of the engine bay, its next to the yellow one. The yellow one is for the ECU and the black one is for the guage. Actually, clean them both, just in case!! I think people near London use a chap called Darren, I'm sure someone will point you the right way for him or someone else though.

Guy,

Didn't say where in London you are but I may be able to help you with the sensors if you need it. I have a Techtom and that may help establish whether it's the gauge or the sensor (or the connection) that's misbehaving.

I'm in Essex kind of equidistant between Stortford, Chelmsford and Harlow.

Bilky - Thanks for the tip, I'll try that at the weekend.

Andy,

I'm in Greenwich - so not too far away, but I'd bring the car over to you anyway.

If cleaning the connectors doesn't work, I'll take you up on that kind offer if it's not too much trouble for you (although I'm not sure what a Techtom is! - is it one of those Nissan diagnostic things?)

Yes, it plugs into the diagnostic port on the ECU. Not as good as a Nissan CONSULT, but can still be pretty useful.

is this cycle continuous or does it do it once then act normally ?

it could also be a faulty thermostat.

but check the sensor, or at least the wiring to the sensor, first.

the sensor you want is the one on the right

It seems to do this once, then is fine for about 5 mins, then starts again!

I'll check the sensor as you suggest Craig - thanks for the pic (v. useful as I'm not the world's greatest car mechanic / electrician!)

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think the Techtom will pick up the reading from the guage sensor - the ecu doesn't even read from that so......

CheerZ,

Andy

Well it picks up the water temp sensor which the ECU uses for various things.
