I've seen the light! Auto = Arse! IMHO

I don't want to start the old Auto vs. Manual thing off again so let's get that straight from the outset!!!!!! wink.gif

But I've spoken to a few guys who are technically worthy of advice today and the fact of the matter is this...

Z auto boxes aren't upto it! Plain and simple!

Not just Z's, Supra Autos are the same, hey the Autos can't take the power.

If you wanna go the 400 bhp + route or even less then the standard auto box is gonna crumble big time in a short period of time!

I've been converted, what more can I say? Just my opinion by the way so don't take it personally wink.gif

I love my Auto for what it does, lazy driving basically and I'll stay with it. But the Manual cars can take much higher BHP increases in their stride whereas the Auto falls at the first fence! Fact of life biggrin.gif

Not saying much more, but I'll see how mine performs after the rebuild and the mods get slapped on(waiting in the wings) but I don't have alot of faith!

By the way, me and the Bro wonder have been debating this...so can someone answer this for us?

Q. What exactly do you get when you get the "fast road rebuild" on yer auto Z???

I know they uprate the line pressure but what else do you get for the 2.5K????

Cheers guys

Timmy Turbo,

You have far too much energy. You post is ouzzzing with enthusiasm and its 2.30am LOL! biggrin.gif

When I read the title "I've seen the light" I thought you were talking about dawn.

It's way past my bed time and I really shouldn't be here this time of night wink.gif, I could get myself a nasty repution smile.gif.

So I'll bid you a night, night, and let all the other lads and lasses who have had their 40 winks answer your post in a sensible manner.

Zee ya m8t

Staying power fella biggrin.gif

Knackered though! biggrin.gif

Karaoke anyone??? Light weights! LMFAO biggrin.gif

oh poor timmy i see you've spent the day with the manual boys and are losing faith with the auto army.....as you say over 400 possibly 450 you will need a good old rebuild for an auto box but why would you want more than 450 horses anyway unless you are gonna go up the dragstrip every weekend then 450 bhp is enough to take out most things too many people are blinded these days by the quest for massive horsepower its not needed as now matter how many horses you have unless you are a jun engineer you are never going to get more than 210mph out of a z so dont be tempted by the dark side of the force stay true the your jedi teachings and be happy with 450 as and when you get there

Timski who has been filling you with crap mate? CRUMBLE AT FIRST FENCE EHHHH! Tim as you know my Z is over 400bhp and it is an auto.No apple crumble yet matey wink.gif.

Get ure self a manuel...autos are fur huggy bear pimp wannabees.Ant respray the car silver too. tongue.gif

Oh Timmy, no mate no, I have seen this power thing soooo many times before. When I lived on the dark side (pre-zed)I ventured in to the forbidden forest where Sierra Cosworths reside (owned one for 4 years) twas a dangerous place full of lying goblins and hidious gremlins all who`s plan were to bewitch the power hungry into parting with there peices of eight, lured by bhp and wooshing dump sound, intakes of dragon breath only surpassed by the exhaling of 4" tails. To those who believed there was sanctury within the "Maxed" powered fraternety only danger lurked as turbo hell was only inches away, don`t look back said the white wizard but it was too late, fate had befallen me,I too had entered the lair of magazine hell, here life only exists in its basic form.No light can enter or escape the black hole of BHP bullshit, but then a crack appeared and a blinding light somehow broke through a way out helllllpppppp! Reality returned it was time to sell the "Cossy"

In my ownership I must of contacted at least 10 different performance companies who lied cheated and basically conned money out of me as the imparted their so called knowledge. However after 4 years and an engine rebuild (done in my kitchen) I was enlightened and knew to no longer believe the established dealers and tune shops they all tell porkies to get your money, and of course now the Ford has gone it time for the Nissan goblins to deal their share of misinformation and money making advise. So be aware, walk away from these guys...and don`t looooook back, hmm they even say manuals are tougher!! see what I mean? can`t help their little pixie way. LoL

Ok OK so I saw Harry Potter last night.. can you tell?

Jeff TT

welcome to the sane side timy my friend.

You said it m8t.

At the end of the day the whole auto manual thing on the rr did show up the autos, all excuses accepted.

Now wheres that link to order another clutch biggrin.gif

And that is the problem with manuals smile.gif

The box might take 600bhp, but the clutch don't.. And you'll need a left leg the size of arnie to work the triple plate clutch smile.gif

And them clutches aint cheap you know...

It's the same with the 200sx.

Can't really speak for the S14 but the S13 auto can only take around 250, where the manual is good for at least 400, Norris' S13 is around 450bhp.

Besides which I used to have an auto and what a bore it was to drive. frown.gif

According to Jap tuning house Top Secret the Auto box on Soops are stronger - I remember seeing an 800bhp soop in a mag and they reckoned it was running a standard auto box.

Was in max-p***r tho so it was prolly a bunch of shit lies.

biggrin.gif LMFAO biggrin.gif

OK that certainly livened things up around here wink.gif

Tell me this, why is it then that I know quite a few Z owners who have added tiny mods to their VERY low mileage motors and the Auto has gone bang shortly afterwards???

Fucks sake, my Merc is a 2.3 16v Cossie headed monster and has covered 183,000 miles, yep that's one hundred and eighty thousand big mother klicks and the engine needed rebuilding before the AUTO!!!

AUTO BOXES ON Z's ARE THE WEAKEST LINK...GOODBYE! biggrin.gif

Maybe some people are buying cheap, nasty Zs where half the components in the car are the weakest link? biggrin.gif

What at 20K miles? I don't think so fella! biggrin.gif

But that is my point. What car on earth would break down at such low mileage unless its jinxed (anyone remember car "number 13" from Neighbours about 15 years ago wink.gif) or its a Lotus (j/k).

Seems very strange. There are a LOT of people on here with autos, huge mileage and many more mods than you. Nothing (even PTU) should break at 20k. And after only 20k miles, you've also needed an engine rebuild. I'm planning a rebuild when I hit 130k to 150k. I'd be seriously disillusioned if I needed so much work at such low mileage. I'm not saying your car is cheap or nasty (no such thing when talking about Zs), that was bad wording by me but I certainly dont think you've had a typical Z ownership experience otherwise we'd be having group buys on engine rebuilds, lol. No offense intended m8 etc etc. Just a thought.

Andy

Andy me old mucker,

For starters I'm not talking about my car, I would be well chuffed if my car had only covered that sorta miles! biggrin.gif

Mine has done about 75K I think, not going off on one about the car etc. But when you know(personally) at least two people who have had to have either gearbox builds or engine builds at relatively low mileage that doesn't mean that you have bought a complete lemon!

My Bro is completely neutral but reads the posts on this forum as he's interested coz a 300 was the car he wanted. But he's glad that he didn't get one now, but he said to me the other day that everytime he comes on here he sees nothing but people posting about things having packed up and major work having to be done on these cars.

That's an outsiders point of view on 300ZX's, I agree, there are peeps out there with 100+ klicks on cars and no major problems but at the end of the day they seem to be a minority with the majority having nothing but constant and major failures with these cars!

Nothing wrong with my gearbox by the way, just that at some point some fucking muppet has not secured the ATF tube back onto the bell housing so I'm looking at big wonga just to drop the box! What? Spend big money on a Z just to do a simple job? Errr yep! biggrin.gif

So while the box is off, might aswell burn another couple of grand after all...it's only money! LMFAO biggrin.gif

just to throw a spanner in the works, i have tracked a clutch down for my car capable of handeling 550 foot pound of torque fro a measliy $184 plus shipping, not that expensive i have to say.

Wonder what it costs for level 10 rebuild on autobox ? biggrin.gif

Funny you should ask that mate...spooky, we were on about this yesterday. Mark was telling us, about 4K for the build but how much to ship an auto box to the Yank Planet and back again? I know how much I paid on my Stillen brake kit...so it ain't a cheap option biggrin.gif

I should be ordering my new clutch pretty soon from the americas, can you advise me on costing options and timlines (i do so appologise for going of topic)

Now how big a job would it be to convert auto to manual ?

and think of the low down grunt with the quiker spooling turbos biggrin.gif

Your clutch shouldn't be a bank robber matey, my brake kit was a huge box and weighed a ton! biggrin.gif

Dunno what happened there to be honest, I got cained on transportation charges from Heathrow to Manc Land and then custom clearance and airport handling charges and Value Arsed Tax etc.

Unlike with me Techtom, which by the way is also a waste of space as this Turbo Timer I got from Johnny boy yesterday does virtually everything the Techtom does!

However, sometimes you have no choice but to order from the US as some stuff you can't get here.

Oh I'm a miserable bastard tonight! wink.gif

Sick of having a car that's constantly off road and requires 10's of thousands spending on it to make it go!!! Fuckin' shite these cars, but hey, if I sold now I'd be lucky to get 2K for it...WANK or what?

Soup? Oh I wish!

Oh the wonders of zed ownership.

Dont even go there, was sitting at craigs today moaning like a whore with sore tits, about the cost of ownership lol.

It was put clealry last night to me watching a rugby match. (SA versus America- at least we won this one)

Zed car perfection is something you will work at your entire life, but is virtually impossible to obtain/ loosly translated.

I think the word is bitter m8 wink.gif

BTW, if your Techtom is useless.. fancy giving it to me? biggrin.gif

Hi Timmy,

sorry, I misunderstood your post and thought you only had 20k on the clock. Fair enough I suppose. One thing about lurking on forums like this (as I lurk on other forums a lot) is that you only hear about stuff going wrong. Nobody wants to have a thread from every person, every day saying "My car is going fine today, no problems whatsoever". Then again, we are a rather small bunch and we do seem to have a fair few problems. I guess I'm one of the lucky(ish) ones .

Cheers,

Andy

Dear Andrew,
