Embarrasing newbie questions

Forgive my humble stupidity, but you must have all been in my shoes at some point - just got your mits on your first Zed, and need to know a couple of bits.... feel free to snigger and stuff at how silly my questions are - I know I'll be doing the same in a few months!!!!

FYI, its a 91 TT import Auto (already familiar with the poo-pooing of autos, so no need to go there!!!).

Anyway, regarding fuel.... do they run okay on regular unleaded or am I renting a permanent spot at the super unleaded/Optimax pump?? I've only put Optimax in it so far, but I'm jealous of those company car drivers getting their regular fuel for about 5p a litre less, and wondered if it would be okay to join them???

Next, the auto box... I know its been explained a million times before but can someone tell me exactly what the three different positions on that switch does?? Its got Power/A-T/Hold positions - I could obvisouly experiment, but it would be nice to have an idea of what I'm supposed to be looking for first :-) I understand that its something to do with keeping it in a particular gear longer before changing up and stuff, but which poisition?? And why are there 3 positions, rather than this just being a sort of on/off switch??

Lastly, rear lights. All 3 lamps in my boot spoiler brake light have gone. Been for a reccy at Halfords and they don't seem to have the right ones. Anyone know a part number at all??

Cheers in advance for the massive flood of replies... and auto pisstakes.....

Firstly welcome to the best forum on the planet mate.

Next, ignore the Auto vs. Manual stuff...it's a running joke wink.gif

Unleaded is fine but obviously if you're running a Twin Tub then the higher the octane the better to be honest.

Not sure about your Auto option button as I drive a UK car, I did have a Mk III Supra with power and normal mode switch aswell as the overdrive on the shifter.

Loadsa guys on here can help you out with that one though biggrin.gif

hi welcome.

Try to see first of if your ECU is stock, as any modded ecu units from japan will rather have optimax im sure.

To be honest i only use super plus, but im sure others will tell you 95 is fine ?

good luck and no need to worry about silly questions here, cause soem of us have been here almost since the beginning of this forum and still ask plonkers everyday biggrin.gif

Personally I run super/optimax..

The hold/normal/power switch -

Hold mode; The box will start off in 2nd gear, and change up to 3rd as soon as it possibly can, and will not kickdown, or use 1st gear (unless you have the lever in 1st!)

Normal; shifts as normal. full throttle activates power mode for 10seconds and disengages the aircon for 10seconds also (if running)

Power; Kicksdown more readily, and will hold the lower gears longer when you are driving (not full throttle, that still changes up just before the redline as normal).

Hope that helps,

Az

THe bulbs you get in this country are slightly bigger so I had to file out the holes a little in the plastic on the back of the brake light to get them in. But the connection end of the bulb is the same.

For the small amount of cost difference in Leaded / unleaded and the potential for engine damage it ain't worth using Regular Unleaded in my opinion. If you have any mods on your car this is even more so.

Also, because Super / Optimax has a higher energy rating you will get more MPG, thereby offsetting the cost.

Sorry I can't answer your Auto question mines a manual, and I don't have the middle brake light either.

in the tech sec, from the list of common parts :-

26261-30P00 Spoiler Brake Lamp Bulb

it costs about 3 quid more to fill up with super or optimax, but i get at least 30 more miles per tank which is about 6 or 7 quid, so works out better overall

and there was a recent thread on how the j-spec auto box works

Normal unleaded is fine for a stock TT.

Welcome to the mad house!!

I use Optimax mostly, if I am low on juice and need some urgently I will put in Super Unleaded, I will not put in Regular Unleaded....nope, never.

Personal preference really!

But as I say 90% of the time it's Optimax. But then I am running 340bhp now so it's better for my Z.

Jez...normal unleaded? The same stuff that goes into every other car on the road (unless it's diesel of course wink.gif ) no way in this world, I want my Z to last!

Most informative u guys.... cheers m8s

I guess for piece of mind I'll carry on with Optimax fuel... s'pose it aint that much more pricey and it seems to be the general opinion......

As far as the lights go - I just went and got 3 new lamps for the spoiler - I've used regular UK type indicator (I think) lamps, rated at 6W each. They fit nice and snug, and the weird thing is they actually seem brighter than the off-the-wall crazy Jap 13W rated ones.

Auto box?? Cheers for the advice, now at least I know what to look for.

BTW, no mods as yet, standard stock all round. Imagine though, having not owned a car for 18 months, and having been subjected to the nightmare of a 1.9D Peugeot Expert company van for all this time, my stock TT already feels like its literally gonna take off. Nuff speed. For now.....
