 When driving my car at constant speed, it is fine. But when I put my foot down, it makes a howling whistle sound. I am not sure what is causing this, it never used to do this, but recently it has started. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. My car is an automatic twin-turbo.

Sounds like either leaky recirc valves or a boost leak somewhere.

Check all the air pipes and intercooler connections are done up tight first.

Not sure how you can identify the recirc valve problem without swapping them but anyone who's had it will know the sound - often said to sound like a goose or an owl!

Do a search on here for "goose honk" for lots of info!

Chris.

If it proves to be recirc valves and you dont fancy BOV's, ive got some recirc valves for sale.

Pete

it sounds like recircs but dont rule out viscous fan, mine failed and would make a whineing sound, bit like the misses :D ,dont rule that out!!

Just in front to the side of the radiator.

If you have an aftermarket airfilter..you can see them by removing the nose panel...otherwise if you have origional airbox you may need to remove this first.

Krsmayo did mine last week as they sounded like the horn on a british rail train....BBBEEEERRRRRHHHHEERRRNNNN....and the famous goose honk...HHHoooonnnnkkkk...lol

Mind you..mine nver whistled like you say your problem is.....could be a boost leak or like greg says maybe a fan issue?

Think theres an FAQ on this somewhere...do a search for all related terms....BOV/Goose honk/re-circ and so on.

Good Luck

Id wager its the viscous fan, they are alot louder when the weather gets warm.

If it still makes the noise as bad when in neutral and not moving id bet its that.

Think mine may need doing, as its sounds alot noisier in hot weather.

He said it only does it when he puts his foot down so i can't see it being the fan.

Just to point out there are 2 recirc valves, one each side of the car!

Is this a job i can do, on my own?, or do i need to take it to a garage. Whats the best way to gain access to replace them.

Remove the centre panel .. two bolts .. remove induction or stock air box .. To gain better access remove the fan .. another two bolts .. you will then have good access to them both .. HTH

The fan does create a howling sound when the viscous coupling is shagged cos it spins up at the wrong speed WHEN YOU PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN, when its slowing down when your foot is off it doesnt do it so bad.

Replace the recircs if you like but you may be wasting your time and money.

If i were you id rev it on the spot, see if it still does it, then switch it off, get a brave mate to hold the fan, then start her up and rev it again, if the noise is gone, its the viscous.

mine made more of a howling noise when accelerating,so id say yours is viscous coupling

cheers for the advice. If it is the viscous coupling. Do I need to replace the fan? Any pics?

Easiest was to spot goosehonk is to go for a drive and try to get your boost guage to read on zero (i.e no vacuum no boost) thats when they usually goosehonk. Have a look down to see what your boost reading is when you hear the noise.

...carefull of the fan - I've a mate minus the top of 2 fingers co. of a cooling fan - not a Z cooling fan, but still a fan.

good luck

Jack

Hi mate if it is your fan and viscous clutch mechanisum then I have two for sale believe it or not. 1 is almost brand new as I replaced it with a 18" Pacet fan and the other looks new which I bought of Mike Feeney along time ago and then lost it in my garage :headvswal

£90 for either.

ROFL

Well thats because my missus went out and bought 3000 square feet of maple tongue and groove flooring, an Arga and loads more stone troughs and stuff from an Architectural Salvidge sale and told them to store it in the garage. You couldn't get through the door.

I told her that my tools and drill were all in there so I wouldn't be able to do any DIY.

Bitch went out and bought me a new drill and some screw drivers.
