Think my auto box is on its way out :headvswal

Was driving on the M4 at about 80mph. In 4th and everything was sweet. I floored it to over take but the 'box just went into neutral, I ease off and it goes back into 4th. Its been doing this on and off since I bought the car.

This time however, went into what seemed like N, then a loud sharp clunk. Still in 'N'. I eased off and back into 4th like usual.

 

On my way home tonight, same thing, tried to overtake, went into 'N' then a ckunk again. Now, no drive what so ever. I pulled into the slow lane, doing about 50, still no drive. Moved the lever into 2, bit of a jerk then into 2nd gear. Slipped the lever into D, no drive, then it went into 3rd. Wont change up to 4th at all.

Managed to get all the way back to Ipswich in 3rd.

When getting moving from a standstill, I have to manually select 1 with the lever, then 2 then put it into D. Doesnt always dive drive in D, hit and miss, never changes up or down of its own accord. Also can hear a tin scraping noise like loen noswil posted earlier.

This sounds very expensive to me :headvswal

But I've got my fingers crossed as this site is a font of knowledge and I hope there's someone out there who knows what to do!!

Just hope its something I can do myself! (doubt it tho)

does sound serious, i screwed my auto box on a previous z with similar syptoms. it's late and no experts around to give proper advice, but if it is screwed I hope you can locate a decent second hand box, i'm sure i saw one advertised here lately.....was it splatt?

Did the diagnostic (without Conzult). Says its my revolution sensor

had alot of trouble with my auto too. basically in 2 years it had 3 gearboxes. it is a jap model, which needed an extra oil cooler fitted as the standard one doesnt work well (wish id known this earlier)!!

 

in the end i decided to get a manual fitted. cost £1500 (could poss get it cheaper by couple of hundred though) but was deffo worth it. just can be hard trying to source the parts. there are a few places that can provide just the gearbox but its getting all the extra bits that are a nightmare!
