Welcome:)

Sounds like Starter motor has stripped some teeth. You can get hold of a replacement used one of one of the Breakers in Traders forum, pretty easy to replace from underneath the car.

sound like starter motor problem. im not a genius on these though so some of these guys might have more of an idea! :nana2:

It may just be gunk in the starter motor. Could be the gear is not flying out straight away, hence it is spinning by the time it tries to connect to the flywheel(?) And makes that noise.

Anyway, before you splash out for a new or second hand one, take it off, give it all a good clean up. I used lots of WD40 and an air line on mine (but I think someone said WD40 is not good). But it did the job on mine and I haven't had any probs since.

Possibly just pully alinement on Altenator or over tightened fan/pully belts.

Have you had new pully or cam belts?

Or had a service prior to the noise?

Also is it only when you start from cold?

If so check the above.

Its very comon and easily put right.

If your saying it screeches and fails to turn the engine over, two possibilities are as above, starter not engaging or teeth stripped on flywheel ring gear.

If its the ring gear mine was the same, its down to luck where the engine stops and wether it lands on the damaged part of the ring, only one solution for both casuses cause they just get worse and more embarrasing.

its usually the drive INSIDE the starter, rather than the teeth on the gear itself. pull the starter off 1st to check for signs of damage to the ring gear, otherwise it'll prob be the starter
