Old thread...but I thought I'd add to it....

My understanding is that Optimax is just normal 95ron + some additives. The fact it isn't given a 97 ron rating make me suspicious Optimax is just some marketing con.

Shell dont put 97 at the pump because it does not meet the UK requirement for 97 ron. So it's nowhere near a 98.

Optimax is a 98 minimum rating, gauranteed not to fall below 98ron from the pump (fuel octane level drops over time)

Where's that info from then Dave? Shell themselves?

Having a debate about this over on another forum, conflicting reports. Interesting stuff though. :)

Look on http://www.shell.co.uk and you won't see anywhere Optimax being advetised as either 97 ron or 98 ron just the fact it's full of stuff to clean your valves and injectors !! Oh and Ferrari testing there fuels !!

BP utimate do say it's 97ron along with Esso's new unleaded (can't remember what it's called)

;)

Still confused though as to 'Exactly' what the fuel really is.

I was sure the Optimax pumps read 98 ron on them....will check later, need to fill up. I read somewhere that its officially 98.6 ron.

Do check...would like to know when the 99ron version will be out. Bit of octane booster and you'll be hitting the 100ron that the Japs run them on. :)

I have used it and it is 99 ron and it seems as good as optimax? now thats IMO. so dont shoot me.

In theory, it should be better as 99ron is a guaranteed 99ron....optimax is not...or rather....not sure.

Shell don't advertise the octane level on Optimax. I have checked over and over, I only go by what the attendant say it is - 98

There used to be a Forum on the Shell website - called ask the experts. The "experts" on there, said that shell optimax is rated at 98.3 - 98.6 ron....but they;ve removed the forum now, can only find references to it on google's cache.

Just called shell and they say 98 ron thats it they were stuck as to what to say the girl had to ask around the office i think , how crap is that the number of technical is 08708 500946 if anyone can get any more joy than me.

98 RON IS MAD. They say its 99 ron and thats a con. BP claim 98 on their super unleaded so if Optimax is not 99 then its no better than BP or any of the other 98 ron sellers? But when all is said and done my car does without doubt seem to run better on Optimax. or is it all an illusion? Is it a PLACEBO? :smash: are we slowly destroying our imported cars because shell are fookin liars? :(

Shell Optimax (is/was) 98 RON. That's what it was sold as. It should say 98 on the pump too. If not, I'd be suspicious they've quietly changed it!

BP Ultimate is 97 RON (just another Super Unleaded really)

Std unleaded is 95.

From Shell website:

What is octane rating and how does it affect the running of a car?

The octane rating is a measure of a fuel's resistance to knocking. Knock, also known as `pinking', occurs during combustion when the fuel-air mixture explodes ahead of the flame front rather than burning smoothly, causing a knocking noise. Using a method established in 1929, petrol is rated on a scale of 0 - 100, and given a research octane number (RON). In the 1920s petrol had an octane rating of around 50 to 60. Today, Lead Replacement Petrol has a minimum octane of 97 RON, Unleaded of 95 RON, Super of 97 RON and in August 2001 Shell introduced Shell Optimax, which with an octane rating of 98 RON is the UK's highest octane petrol.

From Shell website:

Theres food for thought? Nice one graham. that info is priceless. If you use a octane booster then is that a good thing to raise the ron ? ? ? ?

I read and was told that by using a low rated ron petrol I could do damage to my Jap Engine. whereas UK cars are OK?

300zx manual

The service manual quotes "at least 95 RON must be used" for Europe (ie turbo) cars and "recommends....above 95 RON" for Australia (ie NA) cars.

It doesn't mention Japan. :smash:

From Shell website:

That was a marketing ploy that could not be substaintiated that resulted in them removing the octane label at pump in frontcourt. If it can be proven, they would still have the label now!!

I still use it though. This debate may change my mind about it.
