Did anyone watch it last night, where that bloke hit the wall in his brand new £500k maserati? Ouch! Lucky he got away with the slight damage.

Anyway, the reason for this thread: did anyone watch it last week where they had an update on the modifications they've carried out on their lotus esprit?

They must think all the people that watch it are stupid and don’t know anything about cars, etc. Now I’m no mechanic but Tiff Niddel (is that his name?) was talking major bullshit. Two points:

1) He said they installed a charge cooler while the pictures showed a silver can with small clear hoses flowing a blue liquid. The clip was too short to get a good look but a charge cooler and intercooler are the same thing and I doubt the turbocharged esprit is not already intercooled. The only reasonable explanation from the pictures is they installed a second air-water intercooler somewhere else in the car which is stupid because there nowhere near as efficient as air-air and would mean lots of long plumbing. It would be so much simpler to replace the stock intercooler with a bigger one.

2) When he was out driving the car he was demonstrating the sound of the turbocharger which was fine until he said that the shuddering almost rumbling sound when he let off the accelerator was the wastegate! WHAT??? Total crap, you can’t hear a wastegate and a wastegate would never, to quote him “waste” the air when you let off. The wastegate would be firmly shut! The sound was either a very fancy dump valve that made the strange sound (I doubt it) or as I suspect, the turbocharger was going into surge and coughing its tits off. Those turbos will not last very long.

Just kind of pissed me off that a car programme would say these things which are clearly untrue.

Yeah, but at least we got to see VBH's tits bouncing all over the place when she was driving the TVR!   ;)

PMSL

Anyone remember that guy who was rattling on about

cheap jap cars, in a previous series, the yellow z in particular?

Referred to it as a ''300SX!'' Muppet! :nono:

Dont these people know anything about cars, don't

they have researchers, not that they should need them.

Even my mum knows the difference between a ZX & SX!

...but a charge cooler and intercooler are the same thing...

errr not quite mate. Intercooler is air / air, charge cooler is air / liquid with remote liquid / air radiator somewhere else.

Current issue of Japanese Performance has long article on this featuring http://www.paceproducts.co.uk/automotive-parts.shtml

so what i assumed from the pictures was correct.

ok there not the same thing but they do the same thing, you know what i meant. still not as efficient as air to air and more complex than replacing stock intercooler.

Not that I'm an argumentitive sod or anything, but a good proportion if not all of what he said is true, I have followed lotus and their development for the past twenty years or so from a distance, this said I am no wizard on mechanics, however.

Early esprits had not Chargecooler, it was only when SE (special Equipment) was brought out that the Esprit was charge cooled, this increased the top speed from 155 to 170 and the 0-60 from 5.7 to 4.5 (depending on who you listen to). Maybe the car shown was an early one?

In all the reports I ever read, drivers stated that the waste gate was the reason for the "hissy rattle" in the ear on throttle shut-off, (never quite grasped this myself). Just as a thought it should be considered that Lotus used a completely different idea on turbo charging as they actually had the Turbos mounted in line just before the carbs, this meant there was virtually no lag, so maybe there was no need to recirculate? I have a couple of books with sketches on the turbo layout, but I'm sure this would bore everyone.

Anyway just trying to provoke some thinking, maybe Tiffs nearly right?

Tiff..er I mean Dave :D

According to the article, chargecoolers are more effective than intercoolers as liquid transfers heat better. Yes it's a more complex fit.

Wouldn't mind opening her waste gate!!! :D

Well those of you that remember will know that i had a zed and an esprit. Anyway dave is pretty much spot on on what he has said, but i shall elaborate a bit more. The model they have is the V8 and as stock is neither intercooled or charge cooled(I believe could be wrong). On a whole they have really made a mess of it, and this has attracted alot of discussion in the esprit comunity. What they are trying to do is actually incredibly easy with a V8 all they needed to do was have bigger turbos a racing chip and then upgrade the gearbox with an upgrade from derick bell that changes the final gearing. With this it would be feesable to break 200mph. I havent followed it and infact havent seen it so dont know all the details but the conclusion in the esprit comunity is that they have gone for making TV not achieving the goal in the best way which is at the end of the day i suppose their choice, they did approach a few people and were advised of they way to go but didnt take that advise. On another note it has already been done take a look at

thats what i thought but i have already had this conversation with my manager (40 years working for Holset Turbochargers), and the chargecooler is only more efficient at low speeds (sub 30mph). after that the intercooler is far more efficient.

doh forgot to say this is assuming there isnt an independant coolant supply.

good info dave and splashout  , didnt expect to find there was no aftercooling on the turbocharged V8. so charge cooler or intercooler or whatever, they DID upgrade. well that throws my first argument out the window

how the **** anyone can think vbh is sexy????????????

you need to get out more lol

she talks out the side of her mouth like a bad dummy

last night she had me in stitches, "drive faster mummy" "change gear mummy"

when she drives the car goes left, she leans left, not sure if its the weight she carrys up top, or she thinks it helps lol

Wouldn't mind opening her waste gate!!! :D

lol i dont think anyones worried about her driving technique!!! i do believe there are some women that arent particularly stunning but have 'that something' that make them all the more attractive. e.g for those of you in the south east - Kaddi Lee Preston (the weather girl on south today)

mmmmmm.

Just a little advice though. TRY SOME POSH TOTTY MATE. I tell you they really are game for anything and always at a canter or full gallop. Then you'll see the attraction.

I Promise its true :D :D :D

Tally Ho old boy

Dear oh dear, poor 'ol ya5een posts up a perfectly sensible thread about the technical aspects of a Lotus Esprit and all we do is go ranting on like a bunch of horny dogs about one of the presenters of the program.....

....sorry about that ya5!!  :slap:  :D

markzx.....I know EXACTLY what you mean about posh totty. I've always found 'upper middle' class women to be very 'open minded' indeed!!  :nana2:
