hi guys took my 92 uk zed in to get air con regassed, and they have come back to me saying that i need a conversion to to run on the new gas they now use (R134A) as mine runs on the old gas (R12) is this a common problem? is my only option to get the convertion or is there places that still regas using the old gas?

cheers

PM "greg" he mentioned to me the other day that he found a place that will regass with R12 in the South West.

ok mate cheers, that will save me the £250 they just quoted

yeah cost me £24 for the leak test which turned out to be ok but then they wanted the other £250 to convert it and regas it, have pm'ed Greg hope he has a contact. off to purchase some red vinyl today and have a crack at DIY interior upgrade...should be fun!!

also the vinyl that is already on the top of the door panels is bubbling, whats the best way to treat that?

thanks paul, where do i get the part from and how easy is it to install? bear in mind im not the most skilled mechanic ;)

there is a drop in replacement. Got mine done 3 years ago and it still works great. R 416 or 426 or something but defo not the R134A and conversion kit. Cost was £80 and he came to my office to vacuum out the remains of the r12 and pressure test then put in the new stuff.

ok sounds ideal thanks mate.

My aircon stopped working last year. how can i tell if it need regasing or not?

well i took it into a garage that deals with air con units, and paid £24 for them to check it over to make sure it works and if there are any major leaks

Mark IV Air Conditioning, Unit 7a, Middle Green Trading Estate, Middle Green Road, Langley, Berks SL3 6DF 01753 512747 £70.50 regas with R134a no conversion needed. Very straight talking, no bull.

The replacement gas used now is not as good as the R12, and thus needs more compression to make it work at the same level. An addative is mixed with the new gas for cars which work on the R12 for some reason. I think it makes the liquid thinner.

Anyway, what usually happned was hoses and seals blew when the new gas was put in due to the highter compression. Not all cars did this because some are stronger than others. Luckly the 300ZX air con piping system seems to be good enough to handle the pressure and the compressor seems to be large enough to cope too.

Its something I read about a year ago on the internet about air con.

ok great, hope i can sort it then
