The romantic theme was adopted for Black Magic as soon as it was launched in 1933. Early radio advertising featured dramatisations of romantic rendezvous featuring Black Magic, but it was the newspaper and magazine adverts which really launched the romantic theme. Black Magic advertising showed women writing letters to friends about their romantic encounters over a box of Black Magic. In the days before television, magazines such as Film Weekly, Picturegoer and Radio Times were popular media for chocolate advertisements. In 1933, a pound box of Black Magic cost just two shillings and ten pence. Prior to the launch, Rowntree had really done their homework. Over 7,000 consumers were asked about their particular chocolate preferences and 3,000 people taste tested Black Magic against the most expensive chocolate assortments, with Black Magic coming out on top. This was a very early example of mass market research.

Well at least I can get on with somthing when I get out of here later. Got my rear lights and centre panel to finish before the weekend. And get it washed at some point before a wedding on Saturday.
