i have a zed 1994 uk auto when the car gets warm the box doesn't select 1st it starts from 2nd gear if i put it in 1st manually the gear box slips and when i give it more revs (quite a few more) it bangs into gear very hard lunging the car forward any help would be great

That does not sound good.

First check levels/replace fluid....& have a sniff of the dipstick, if it does not have that ATF smell but a (how do you describe a smell?) burnt smell then u have a prob.

Shame, I have a jap auto box in excellent condition, pulls like a train. Dont believe they are compatable but check with Mr F (trader and all round expert) amongst others for this to be confirmed.

it does smell burnt i have been told jap box dont fit in a uk which is a shame

I am no expert but why should a jap and UK box differ, does not make any sense,,,,

i thought that but i was told beacuse uk auto box has no power or hold switches they are not compatable if this is not true i would like to know and can i then put the power switches in mine with a jap box

or possibly your gearbox was replaced before by someone who botched up the wiring diagram.

my Auto box changes very smoothly but does strange things sometimes. Theres evidence of it being tampered with , for some reason when you pull the lever back it stops at 2 and i can only put it into 1 if i push down the little orange switch in front of it.

 

try giving Mike at mjp a ring, he might point you in the right direction.

boxes are compatible but the torque convertors are different so you will be fine providing you have the TC with the autobox from a UK or Jspec, ie you can not put the TC from a UK car in to a Jspec and the other way around
