Evening,

I know theres loads of IT bods here so hopefully someone can advise me.

I want to fit more memory in my PC, it came with a 512MB and I fitted a 256MB stick as well a while back but want to swap the 256 one for a bigger one. I had a great big bundle of them to choose the 256 from as my mate had a load I could try out.

Trouble is q a lot of them didn't fit, the notches didn't line up. Now if I want to buy one off ebay, how will I know what will fit? Do certain brand sticks fit certain brand pcs?

Cheers

Pete

you need to find out what memory youve got m8??

ie sd ram (older) has two slots, ddr has one slot

also you need to know the bus speed etc and the max speed your board will take, price of memory now pete your probably better buying two good sticks of branded;)

Cheers bud, its quite a new pc - an E-machines 410. 2.4Gz 512MB DDR, 80GB HDD. Anyone got one? Where can I find out the info about the max speed of the board etc?

i THINK the max memory you can install m8 is 1 gig

so best looking for 2 512's of branded ddr memory

should pick them up pretty cheap

I remember some sticks not fitting because the notches on the ends were too high/low, and others not fitting because of the notches along the bottom. Although most of the sticks were out of fairly old pcs.

You reckon as long as its a decent brand and DDR it should fit then? 1GB total sounds fine.

Cheers

yes m8 ddr will be fine, it was probably sd ram you were trying and as you say out of older machine, generally samsung or kingston is good memory

the cheaper memory tends to overheat, and then you'll start getting errors

or pc rebooting etc etc, again as you say loads on ebay, but best not trying 2nd hand, otherwise try someone like novatech, (touch wood) all the memory ive bought from them has been spot on:)

sorry m8 forgot to say, i assume your processor is a celeron??

if so i would stick to pc100 ddr, otherwise if you went for higher your board may only run at 100, so a waste really;)

(but if not a great deal of price difference it wont hurt to go for 133, lol hope that hasnt confused you)
