Fuel gauge

On the trail of broken things, my fuel gauge is showing a constant 'empty'. Handy when I bought it, as it had a full tank and the guy didn't know. Not so handy when I want to know when to give Gordon Brown more money.

 

Any recommendations before I start taking the dash board apart for broken wires? I've taken the cover off under the spare, all looks OK, nothing been moved or signs of being broken.
