newb considering 300zx rather than gto etc, help me please

I normally drive a fiat coupe 20 valve turbo with 220 at the wheels with subtle mods. Some lunatic has stolen my car and I'm awaiting a settlement figure.

At first I thought about a revised 3 mr2 turbo but then it only has 2 seats and there is only so much bhp you can squeeze out of a 2 litre engine.

I am now considering either a 3000gt or a 300zx.

If I was going for the 300zx it would need to have leather and be manual as well as turbo. T bar would be a bonus.

What I'm really looking for lads is for you to tell me the pro's and con's with each car. I think they both look nice.

Can you perhaps estimate what kind of power output you'd have if you had a standard uk model and a standard jap model then you added best possible exhaust from root to tip with no cats as well as either getting a full remap or digital boost set at a sensible 13psi or so?

I basically want a complete beast for summer.

What kind of 0-60, quarter mile times do these cars pack with above mods and what is the top speed?

I don't have a clue about these cars and am only just starting my research so if you could steer me in the right direction I'd really appreciate that.

cheers

Steve

a gto is less tunable than a z,it also is a PITA to do any engine work, due to the v6 configuration likewise with the z

sorry for the thread hijack .. like I said Rossy's Z is a complete bargain. I was seriously contemplating buying it myself ... Just isn't red ... shame ..... LOL

^^^^

Above is your post on GTOUK......I think you've got the wrong end of the stick mate, its the Z that is an engine out job to change turbo's.

If all you want is a 1/4mile car, the 4WD of the GTO will surely help ;)

but as i said above if all you want is a 1/4mile car and you're not bothered about looks, buy a Pulsa or an early EVO

the midrange of a pulsar and an evo are not in the same league as a z-skyline or other the only means is accelertion they dont have the legs being 2ltr single turbo they die at 150 LOL

oh yeah - needless to say, he bought a Z straight after the test drive in mine. Didn't take much convincing mind, don't think he even got out of 1st gear before he said, "yep, this is what I'm gonna buy".

Didn't GlennC? - I know you're still creeing around here young man!

I drove several examples of both cars before settling on a ZX. The clincher was the superior mid-range acceleration and sheer driving pleasure of the ZX.

The GT/GTO may have 4wd and initial grip is better than a ZX, but the ZX is lighter (1500-ish kg compared to 1800-ish kg) and stock for stock (in UK spec for up to 1994 cars - proven in Autocar/WhatCar testing) a ZX will do 0-100 in just over 14 secs compared to 16.1 for the GT. Plus get decent tyres on the ZX and grip will be OK anyway (although not in 4wd league) and after 40mph you'll be pulling away.

I have read that the latest UK spec (2000 year) 3000GTs were 320 bhp compared to 281 for the earlier ones and would do the 1/4 in mid-13s though. If that's correct that model GT is the one to go for - I still like the look of them and would consider owning one. But the ZX is a hard habit to break......

Drive a few and make your choice.

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

if its just performance your after then possibly a skyline or an evo is what you need. :x:

but if your looking for looks/performance 50/50

both cars are pretty handsome looking motors but the Z wins hands down because of its heritage, similar performance from what ive learned here, and basically its driver satisfaction. also its looks will outdate the gto. from every angle the 300zx is perfect

i must admit ive never looked up the gto site, but they cant possibly be as happy and helpful as the guys here :D
