Hi Guys

im new to this site so hi to all!

Ive had my Z tt for about 2 yrs, but for most of this time its been sat on the drive as ive just tinkered with it. It now has full cream leather, front rear and side skirts, 18" Hi Jon Alloys, plus a few little extras.

Ive recently started using it and have noticed something rather strange!

When you first drive the car (cold) at around 30-65mph there is a bad vibration through the entire car, so bad in fact, the other day I could feel my jaw shaking!, however, the car doesnt rattle?

After about 10mins or so and the car has warmed up, the vibration seems to improve, or maybe im just becoming imune to it?

My tracking back and front is fine, and my wheels are all balanced and fixed correctly? Any ideas? Is this common. It did this with the old wheels too!

Many Thanks

Karl

prop shaft?

Sounds right...prop shaft.

I am breaking mine as is dead...prop shaft was replaced by previous owner about 12/14 months ago so as new.

Theese are not cheap.

Reasonable offer?

I see what your saying, I once had this on a transit. But why does it get better as it heats up?

Is this common? a bearing maybe?

So what could be up with my prop shaft? dented?

How much we talking?

as people have said it's most probably the propshaft centre bearing. If you search you'll find it quite common. new bearing is around £150 + fitting.

Also get the UJ's inspected while you're at it.

What does it run like withot driving.?

If it is only when you are moving then it is probably the prop as this is a common thing.

Get someone with a Conzult to do an engine diagnostic, if that is fine then you have a transmission/drive prob.

If you need any parts I have most available anyway.

Hi

Engine runs smooth, vibrates slightly more when you accelerate maybe. Gearstick doesnt wobble, neither does steering wheel. Just me it seems!!!!!

Thanks

BTW...my propshaft was sorted out by the previous owner and is only 14 months old....less thn 3K miles since replacement so good as new. (run in eh?) Auto TT

Never mentioned, mines a manual?

Where are you mate....If you are local to me (no chance of that) I will gladly have a look at it for you, if not, someone on here will, reckon you should become a subscribed memmber though, you will get soooo mutch more access to info. (Am not on commission and even with a dead Z will be re subscribing)

Im in Chippenham, nr Bristol. Never see many Z's round here, road must be too bumpy, or too many bends and not enough straights!

You sound like an experienced chap in the field of Z's!

Just a bit far then!!

Thanks for your help anyway, would your prop fit a manual TT?

If so how much would you want, inc postage?

done that.

I know ferk all compared to some on here,,This is with out doubt the best and most helpful technical site (and a good grin too) for the Z on the web..l

no!!! propshaft is deffo different,.... well the front section is anyway ,and the front section contains the centre bearing as well

sorry mate my computers playing up. Takes ten minutes to post a reply at moment

if the vibration lessens whilst driving it normally almost 100%sure its prop bearing but dont rule out gearbox mount as this can cause similar effects, but im comfident its the centre bearing once the rubber mount warms up it becomes more durable hence less vibration, same problem i had, went to z-tech ryan fitted new prop bearing- job done car feels alot smoother @60mph+

hth greg

mines a J-spec manual.

Does this have a different prop to an auto or uk spec manual?

well mines manual as far as im aware all manuals are the same autos are differant

it seems the manual ones suffer more. I AM IN BRISTOL AND HAVE A COUPLE OF ZEDS IF YOU WANTED YOU COULD POP DOWN AND I COULD HAVE A LOOK AT YER ZED ON MY PIT TO CONFIRM PROP,

My Z vibrates badly from cold as well.I replaced the centre bearing over Easter which improved it slightly.I noticed when I separated the centre U/J it had been separated before but there was no markings on it to ensure correct reassembly so I'm wondering if it has been reassembled with wrong alignment, throwing out the whole shaft balance. The other thing I noticed was that both U/J's had wear just around the operating point of the spiders (you could feel it). There is a lot of power transmitted through those small spiders and needle rollers so maybe they need replacing.
