Hi All,

Having bought my zed a few weeks ago with the world's most comedy 80s stereo in it, that incidentally doesn't work anyway, I decided to get a new headunit and maybe some new speakers as I wasn't sure what was already fitted. Anyway, I've now bought a Pioneer DEH-P80MP and am waiting for it to be delivered. Managed to get quite a good deal through a reputable seller on eBay including some 7" speakers and tweeters for less than the price of the headunit alone elsewhere so I'm pretty chuffed.

Question is where to get it fitted? And the reason I'm asking is because of the number of electrical problems that seem to be manifesting themselves after people have had various bits and bobs done (often stereo related). I'd fit it myself but it will invalidate the warranty on the stereo which I don't really want to do. OTOH I don't want to let just anyone tinker with my zed and potentially screw up the electrics, so anyone got any recommendations?

Cheers,

Bart

Get yourself a Nissan to ISO interface lead, get your toolbox out and get to work on it yourself.

Even the best and most concencious stero fitter will not take as much care on it as you would if you do it yourself, its not a hard job and theres plenty of people on here who will help you out if you get stuck.

The only way to learn about these things is to have a go yourself.

Good luck.

Thanks mate, I think you're probably right. It does grate a bit to hand over cash for something like this.

yes, do it yourself.

Get the ariel adaptor and an iso adapter harness which you may have to wire in (its a multiplug to make it easier to remove radio if necessary)

I have the relevant wiring colour codes if you require them.

Thanks, that would be useful. I'm hoping the stereo will arrive before I pick up my zed again next Friday. Daft question: once I've got this fitted does this mean the arial will automatically extend when I switch the stereo on? It doesn't do anything at the moment, but this may well be because the current stereo doesn't work at all (check out my rides section and you'll probably be able to see why).

Cheers,

Bart

Do it yourself! if you have the ISO adaptor, its dead easy. My Sony headunit took me 30 minutes to fit and I'm no einstein when it comes to electrics... :D

yep got to agree fit it yourself !

when I bought my Z the previous owner had just had a stereo fitted by a "profesional", and wanted the unit back. I agreed to remove it cause he wasnt sure about doing the job.

when i took the radio out  "holy shit" seen a jar of worms neater,

wires cut for no reason and only 2 speakers wired up. then went to remove the leads to the amp in the back and found they were a fire waiting to happen!!!!

Do as b19rks says and get the ISO connector and fittings a piece of piss, if i remember correctly the only wire i had to connect was the one for the rear speaker amps. ohh and you will need an ariel adaptor, or do as i did and buy an extension cable cut it and splice it !!

You'l take longer than a proffesional but you will do it right!!!

mate it takes a good half hour as you ave to remove the centre dash bit which is a few screws.

after that as long as you have the correct plug its hey presto!

I got a big, famous stereo ( 'ICE'!) shop top sell and fit my stereo. They advertise big in car mags etc so I thought they'd be good.

They did a terrible job. I went back and complained and they ummed and arrd.

I went back again with a letter to the boss and they took me seriously, and stayed open 90 minutes after closing to get it all right (except they couldn't get the electric seat working again they said it had probably just broken and it was my problem).

I got home and found they'd dropped a trim screw in the seat rail and they'd charged me almost twice what other places were for the stereo unit.

I'd never go back there. i'd do it myself or use a little, low-profile place nearby instead.

hi

if youve a problem filling the space where the cd player was i posted a thread earlier about this problem and you look like you might need it.

must admit im jealous though, any import ive bought has had the original stereo ripped out and would like to have seen one working or not for nostalgic purposes!

Mine is still fitted with the original stereo. I might get round to fitting a new one some day. It only picks up radio 2 and plays those really weird plastic things with a lot of black tape inside!! I luv it!!

(wouldn`t mind an mstation tho.) Anyone use them?

Thanks, that would be useful. I'm hoping the stereo will arrive before I pick up my zed again next Friday. Daft question: once I've got this fitted does this mean the arial will automatically extend when I switch the stereo on?

Yes it should automaticaly extend when you turn the stereo on, i also advise to fit it yourself, i had a crappy japanese stereo in mine when i bought it which only tuned in to classical tunes. I bought a iso connector plug and fitted a cd player and it only took 30 mins i am well chuffed.

That settles it then. I'm not letting anybody from a car stereo shop anywhere near my Z: stuff the warranty on the stereo, sorting out problems on the Z resulting from incompetence could be a lot more hassle and a lot more expensive. Thanks guys. I'll order myself an ISO adapter and an aerial adapter so hopefully I'll be good to go next weekend.

Cheers,

Bart

I have both antenna/ariel adapter and ISO adapter.

ISO adapter will need wiring into the loom (easy) no use to me.

£15 delivered if you want?

the rear speakers run off a factory amp in the rear wing, so if you couple it up you will find the rear speakers not working, you will need to run a pair of speaker wires from head unit to the rear speakers.

Richard

Shite!!!!

I been trying to find a loom to fit a new unit I bought for weeks, howsabout second dibs Please splatt, you got PM Buddy.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the help. Finally had enough time yesterday to fit the stereo, which actually arrived two weeks ago. I wanted to give myself a lot of time to do it so I didn't have to rush the job.

Just a warning though, the P80MP doesn't come with ISO connectors so I had to buy a connector to fit it to the ISO adapter. I had two choices at this point: connector blocks (or something similar like crimps) or soldering... and, well to cut a long story short I've been wanting an excuse to get a soldering iron for years, so I decided to go down that route. Took a bit longer but I'm very happy with the results. A very tidy job even if I say so myself (and I haven't used a soldering iron in anger for about 13 years). Then it was just a case of connecting the wiring harness to the stereo and the ISO adapter to the connectors in the car and that was basically it. I chopped the end off of the aerial relay wire that came with the stereo and soldered it to the corresponding wire on the ISO setup and that now works too.

So I'm chuffed as nuts: finally music in the car!! I'd definitely recommend fitting it yourself to anyone rather than paying a professional. The wiring's nice and tidy, and I didn't cut any of the wrong cables by mistake or lose any screws down the electric seat rails or anything like that so everything that should work on the car does still work. If you don't have the bits you need you can pick them all up for the money you'll save on paying someone to get it done, plus you'll learn a few things, and as a number of people have pointed out you'll almost certainly do a better job.

Thanks again to everyone who posted.

Bart :)

Well done mate. There's nothing better than doing a job on your Z yourself :)

I totally agree. Just spent the afternoon cleaning it with one of my housemates and it now looks totally fantastic so I'm well chuffed all told.

Cheers,

Bart

that's the great thing about this site, if someone wants to have a go at something, you've got friendly afvice to help along the way :)

As you can see from my signature I like my stereo's. Any probs mate give me a shout and I will be more than happy to give you advice over Phone or email. The Wiring is the easy bit with the Pioneer head units, its getting them to fit in the hole that can be the problem.
