Had my cat de-catted today, but Mechanic noticed an exhaust leak (a ticking/tuttering and slight blowing noise) around the Drivers side Turbo exhaust manifold area.

He was unable to get to it (no suprises there) to find out the exact cause. There is also a slight oil leak coming from that same area.

The noise does'nt get any less as the engine warms up.

What are the possible and likely problems and costs.....

Cracked Manifold, Turbo Manifold Gasket, Knackered Turbo....or some simple minor fix (yeh right  )...engine out ?

Whatever the problem, looks like its going to cost a forture just to find out the reason !

Ryan, looks like you might have a new customer soon !

Time to get drunk I think :duffer:

What was the outcome of this then? Easy fix? Think I have a simiar problem - passenger side, defo blowing somewhere around the turbo but can't see exactly where, just get the tractor sound and some exhaust smell when I rev it.

Anyone know any good ways to spot these sort of leaks? Redex in the intakes for lots of smoke maybe?

Had same problem from driver's side turbo area when first got my Z 2 Years ago. The ticking noise got worse & louder as the months went on and eventually caused the drivers side turbo to have excessive wear induced on it for what ever reason. Turned out the gasket from the turbo to the exhaust down pipe was nackerd, so if you got the same prob PLEASE get it sorted quickly or it could be new turbo time!! :xxx: :xxx:    :hurl:

Yep, that was it. Gasket between Turbo and downpipe elbow.

Thanks for that.

I was wondering if it could damage to the turbo. Maybe because of the lower pressure (like when you decat) due to the leak?

It's my only car though so I am still driving it (although very gently). Pretty sure that mine is leaking from the same place. So hopefully it'll hold together till the weekend.

Oh yeah - and not too big a job?? Don't have to remove the engine or anything :)

Ryan didnt you mention at a meet you thought my exhaust was blowing? if it is it must be from the manifold end as ive replaced all the other bits. I dont notice it myself, but having replaced the rest of the exhaust which had more holes than a tea bag its quiter now that its ever been since i had the car.

Group buy on Exhaust repair services ?

I have'nt fixed mine yet, but Ryan was very helpfull in diagnosing the problem for me. I'll be attempting the repair sometime this week. Its not an engine-out job, but it does look like it will quite a pig to get to the bolts to replace the gasket.

Mmmm. Maybe a bit of exhaust bandage and gun gum for the short term is in order :smash:

Legrath, this ticking and tractor noise is exactly the sound I'm having, how much was it to get it all fixed and do you still get the ticking/tractor noise?

Cheers,

Jon.

After plastering the turbo outlet gasket with gun-gum, no change - still sounds like a tractor. Turns out it's the fooker in the picture. Which looks even harder to replace

Patched it with more gun-gum (I love that stuff) but anyone replaced this gasket? How hard is it to do - looks to me like the two bolts nearest the block are impossible to get at!

Forget using any sort of exhaust Sealant paste that close to the turbo, it wont be able to handle the higher temperatures.

As everyone is on the subject i too have a tractor noise but on passenger side. When the car is cold (left overnight) i start it warm it an nothing no noise if i then go anywhere park it up come back a couple of hours later and start it the noise is there. i then warm it up down the road a couple of minutes a couple of blips on the throttle and its gone F**ked if i know :headvswal

As regard to tractor noise r u sure its the exhaust and not an injector playing up? when my injector wire broke mine sounded like a tractor or imprezza (same thing).

Yes, agree with what marcus said. That does'nt sound like an exhaust problem, but more of an intermittent problem with it running on 5 or less cylinders (most likely faulty coilpack or injector).

Although hard to diagnose on forum.
