The story so far,

I bought a Sony Xplod 4x50w to replace my standard Jap unit and found that 3 of the 4 speakers had torn cones/foam. So, to start, I bought 2 6x4 for the rear 25w rms 100w peak and found that thy distorted at a relatively low volume and thought they were just sh1te. I found 2 6x9 35w rms 100w peak in my dads garage I had a while ago, so I just slipped one in as it were and did a quick comparison. It would seem that both the 6x4's and the 6x9's become distorted at exactly the same volume. Am I right in understanding that the Jap import had an optional rear amp ? Assuming that I have one and this is the problem, where is it located so that I can bypass it ?

Advice appreciated

From what i know, if you have the bose systen you will find an amp for every speaker, they are in the speakr housings, try the link below in the technical library.

You also need to watch that you are not powering them via the stock wiring which is only light section for signal level to the amps. You need to re wire with decent section. If there is a rear amp its on the offside rear under the trim panels and the ABS gizmo is nearby also. You strip the trim panels starting with the centre rear one.

I put 7X5 in the rear spaces and sealed the tops so that the bass cant leak round to the back of the speaker - makes a huge diff to the sound quality.

I'd agree with Willieo and run some new decent speaker cable straight from the speakers.

Ive found its almost impossible to get a decent bass responce from the rear speaker housing so i just put ordinary sony's in there, and spent some money on a decent amp and sub for the boot.

I agree sounds were always sh*t intill i done complete re-wire of stereo system
