The waste in government and wealth of this country mean penny-pinching with kids food is a disgrace. 37p for the kids meal is crazy - if you buy a pint it's equivalent to at least 6 school dinners !!

I agree, healthy luxury foods are so expensive like rice, potatoes, fruit, chicken etc. Especially when you have scratchcards, mobile top ups and kappa shell suits to buy :D:D

Bottom line is it doesnt matter if you make school dinners a quid each. Children given the choice will allways pick the unhealthy option. I remember hiding greens on my plate at home. My parents siad I'd never grow up to big and strong if I didnt eat my greens. Well I never grew up but....

True. And it was a point made in the series. Which is why they took the choice away. Knock on effect: Lots of complaints in the initial set-up period, lots of kids refusing the food. But then, after going hungry at lunch for a couple of days they tried it. And found that no, it wouldn't kill them and yes, it actually tasted good and the kids got over their aversion to trying new food. Plus, with the "unhealthy" food eliminated there was no peer pressure not to eat the "healthy" option.

You'd have to be a fairly radical liberal to not see that a) giving children decent food instead of reconsituted sludge filled with fat and E numbers, and that b) children need guidance for their own well being, are good things.

Unhealthy food often tastes nice, but it doesn't make you feel good afterwards. Another aspect of these cr@p school dinners is, they are not just unhealthy in terms of saturated fats and sugars, but the ingredients are poor quality - at least give them pukka fast food ! Not mechanically reclaimed rubbish that no-one would eat on it 's own. Also, when the kids get used to cr@p, they think that's the norm. and they crave it like cigarettes. They don't see why there's a need to change - they've been TAUGHT badly.
