Sweet Vibrations!

Or maybe not so sweet.

I know that this has been talked about before but frankly I can't be arse to search for the old threads seeing as we are producing atleast a whole screen of up to date threads per day.

However......I have become concious of the car vibrating when I near speeds of 70 and above.

My initial thoughts were that it could be the centre prop bearing but Jeff TT tells me that it could be the gearbox mounting bush(I think thats what he said - sorry memory like a siv' sorry Jeff).

I will be doing a test tomorrow to see if the vibration remains with a slip it in to neutral.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and if so, how did you resolve them?

Ta, very much like!

Cos this happened to me and it was my rear steering arms.Jack your car up and see if there is any play at the rear wheel.

Cos,

I've got a very similar situation - the car vibrates at around 70 to 80mph, with some vibration lingering at higher speeds.

Since I never did much m/way driving it wasn't a big issue, but recently I had to do some serious miles so thought I'd better look into it.

I started cheap and simple and got a wheel balancing done. Turns out all the wheels were unbalanced by some ammount. After getting some weights clamped on, a lot of the vibration has gone away. Maybe it might be worth you trying the same.

Unfortunately, it seems like some of my vibration is coming back. I'd have got a wheel alignment at the same time, but they took one look at my front bumper (another of the Scarab (Greddy lookalike) jobs) and said they wouldn't be able to get the laser on properly frown.gif

Cos, how does your vibration show up? In my car it seems to manifest through the centre console (I can see/hear the head unit shuddering) and, oddly, through the brake pedal, which shakes like a mad bastard. Does this indicate anything to anyone?

Raz

Yassou Costas!

I could be completely off the mark here but have you thought about the possibility that one of your wheels is out of balance? When I first had my Zed it did the same thing at about 75mph and above. Had new tyres fitter and propperly balanced and all was okay again. Again, I could be very wrong here but it's worth looking at something simple before making it all too complex wink.gif

Cheers!

Danny

Well, like you Raz and Danny,

I went for the wheel balancing thinking that it was that, sorted it a bit but still the same.

Have just been out in it and the vibration remains even if I coast or knock it in to neutral at 70+. I also get vibrations through the clutch and brake pedals.... Do you get this and is it normal...I fear not!

Has anyone read my post,or is it invisible?

Well if the vibes are linked to the road speed when the car is in neutral, then you must be looking at wheel balance, drive shafts (and associated suspension), diff, prop or gearbox mountings.

You've checked (and double checked) the rear wheels, next most likely is the prop I reckon.

Oh and Danny, only 2 people on this planet call me Costas - My mum and my Dad.

Gadalavis?

Sorry, no offence but I'm mentally scared from my school days.

Sorry Mac - didn't mean to ignore, just haven't tried your sugestion yet. Will more than likely give it a go Saturday.

Early nites are here and I don't get in till 7pm. Would prefer to see what I am doing unlike my driving at night with the shitty Z lights. (No offence Jeff TT)

Andy,

if it was the prop, and I assume you mean the bearing, wouldn't the vibration go if I put it in neutral, as there would not be any strain of the shaft?

Well my vibration was that strong it nearly shook me fu**ing teeth out redface.gif and it was me steering arms 100%.

Difficult to say, it would still be turning at road speed, just the load comes from the diff end rather than the gearbox end.

I don't know if you guys experienced the same thing but when mine starts vibrating, I get almost the same effect as when you are driving with the targas out where the wind causes a pulsating sensation on your ears.

Cos wear ear muffs mate SORTED biggrin.gif sorry Cos I couldn't resist biggrin.gif

OK. When you find out what you think these vibrations are tell me cos my one has started to do it. However its only on some read surfaces. Any idea of how much it will cos to fix?

Stuart

Well,

I priced up a centre bearing today from the robbing bastards at Nissan and they quoted me £133 + VAT. Should be able to get it cheaper else where though.

Not sure about other prices yet. WIll let you know when I find out.

Is that all it is bearings at the back. If so there is a huge bearing factory. There will be a number on the bearing. If some one can tell it me I can ask how much it will cos there. If they dont have it in stock they make it. Better quality and often then not cheaper.

SRRAE

Thanks but I think it come as part of a complete ruberised unit - not 100%, will check it out as soon as I get under the car.

Cos

...I've just replaced a centre bearing to sort vibration problems. The one I took out seemed ok, but the new one improved the vibrations a little. I left it a week and the turned the prop shaft through 90 degrees at its joint to the diff (easy). This has improved things even further (although now I know what I'm sensing, I can still feel some vibrations at certain speeds). I'm going to try further rotation of the prop shaft in relation to the diff - I think another 90 degrees should do it. I bought the centre bearing off a Forum member for £70 boxed. Mines an auto and I was told I didn't need to replace the transmission mount - as is suggested for manuals.

...hoe this helps.

good luck

Jack

Nice one Jack.

Sounds like a needed job. Don't suppose you know what the price is of the manual gearbox mount with your special forum discount?

Cos

...I bought it of Jez300z. He had a bearing and transmission mount for sale at half price. The bearing was £70 (about £140 list) and I think he wanted £30 for the mount. Mines an auto, so his mount (manual)wouldn't fit.

I'd rotate yout driveshaft 180 at the diff (it's easy - 4 14mm bolts) and see if that works before spending any money.

good luck
