My mate has an old Merc (a 190, about 1990, 2 Litre auto)

The autobox stopped working today - it won't go above second gear.

It was fine before and works ok now but only in 1st and 2nd gears - any ideas what it might be?

Cheers lads!

Knackered!! LOL

Seriously, I cant remember what its called, but autobox's tend to loose the highest ratio first then the next etc etc!

He could try and change the oil etc, but id say he needs a new box :(

Hi...

I had one of these dropped to the floor(cosworth replica)...nice lookin motors

I also had an old AMG 190 that had gearbox trouble.

It used to loose oil and then not engage gear properly like a slipping clutch.

The oil was being sucked through an internal diaphram in the autobox and burnt out the exhaust...Smelt very sweet compared to normal box oil.

Anyway...got this replaced cheaply as part was a matter of pounds and fitting just required dropping the g/box slightly to get it in.

Then it had another problem....

The gear bands started slipping inside the actual box....

in the end it was gonna be cheaper to scrap car n buy another than it was to pay a specialist to do the job.

Hope its not terminal

what are your symptons for the autobox?

Any more details?

It's absolutley as normal but just won't change up out of second.

Is this using the manual select or leaving it in drive?

or both?

He's tried using 'drive' also putting it by hand into '2' and '3'.

It's the same in all - won't go above second gear.

Thanks for the help so far gents!

Is it the Sports autobox or standard one...(does it have the little switch next to lever?....Sports....Economy)

Anyway...

If the oil level is correct then it Must be an electrical sensor in their somewhere tellin it not to change.

Dunno where or how to find it....Sorry.

If you phone the parts department Merecedes of Harpendon they are very helpfull as they have faxed me through pictures of their parts catalogue before and i just tell em what i need.(01582764311)

I will have to post me old merc up sometime...she was a beut...even though it was red

ps...

sounds silly but make sure the water is also topped right up as this indirectly affects the actual level of oil in box and can give you false readings.

cant remember the ins and outs of it but they use the pressure in the system and some jigery pokery in a way i could never understand :smash:

Sounds stupid i know....but it is what it says
