DVLA trying to shaft us more than they already have with SORN.

Just spotted this regarding the new V5C form which is replacing the current V5.

I'm pissed right off with all this. I think we need a national protest for this more than we do for speed cameras. It just goes to show that if they can get away with introducing a small piece of legislation i.e. SORN, then they think they can take over our basic human rights. FFS if I owned a car since 1973 and had it in my garage ever since, what the fook is it to do with them, it's MY car and it's NOT on their land.

Dave , have you seen this from the ABD website, they want to make you pay for declaring SORN too! Unbelievable! It's old news now but you may not have seen it, most motorists dont know about it or care it seems, unfortunately.

DVLA Plan to Introduce Annual "Registration Tax" on all Vehicles.

New Tax to Hit "Laid Up" Classics and Disabled Drivers.

A consultation document recently issued by the DVLA details plans to introduce a new tax on all cars registered on their system, even ones that are not used on the road by their owners.

The "Fee Proposals" consultation, which closes on 8 November, claims the new tax is necessary to cover the costs of issuing photo licences to all drivers, as required by the European Union.

An annual fee of £4.50 is proposed on all vehicles kept on the DVLA's computer. For most cars used on the road, this extra tax will be collected with the Vehicle Excise Duty (formerly called road tax).

However, it will also apply to disabled drivers, pre-1973 classics and cars kept off road under the SORN (Statutory off Road Notification) regulations. None of these categories currently pay VED, so this will be an entirely new and separate tax.

"This means that people are going to have to pay tax to keep their own vehicles in their own garage," said ABD spokesman Nigel Humphries. "£4.50 a year may not sound much, in fact it hardly seems worth the DVLA's trouble to collect it where this cannot be done through VED. But it's a dangerous precedent, and a matter of principle. Why should we pay anything for the details of our property merely to be held on someone's computer?"

Enthusiasts often have several cars kept off road — future projects, possible parts cars, "saved" cars they hope to pass on to others to restore — and they will have to write out and send off a separate cheque for each vehicle every year, as the off-the-road anniversary of registration arises. The DVLA will then have to bank them. That's a lot of trouble and expense for nothing, and how much will the DVLA have left of the money after it has administered this bureaucratic leviathan on behalf of one hapless individual?

"And who is to say that the fee will remain at £4.50?" continued Humphries. "The government has a long history of introducing taxes at low levels and then increasing them year on year, and people are reluctant to trust their assurances. This new registration tax gives them a mechanism for abolishing VED, adding the cost of this to fuel tax and then increasing the registration fee, automatically wiping out the benefits enjoyed by ultra low mileage classic car owners and disabled drivers alike, as well as creating a punitive charge for those storing cars off road. That is why it is to be resisted."

The ABD calls on the DVLA to see sense and desist from penalising classic car owners, disabled drivers and car collectors with this pointless and bureaucratic system. Motorists pay £36 billion a year to the government in motoring related taxes. If the European Union wants photo licences there is plenty here to pay for it.

Check the bit about abolishing VED, raising fuel tax, then increasing the registration fee.

Bxs to the DVLA, Bxs to the EU :xxx: To be perfectly honest I cannot see how they can justify the necessity of photo licences. We allready have passports as a form of photo ID. The cost of these photocards for the older people who have paper licences will be subsidised by the younger people who already have paid their £12 for their photo card licence. Surely there should be an option to either pay the DVLA their £4.50 or give them the two fingers and ask them to delete any information about you on their database, because effectively that's what they are asking you to pay for. I personally think that if everyone in the country just doesnt send off the cheque, then they will be stumped. What they gonna do, take the country to court and give us custodial sentences for not paying up? Of course not.... I think a huge protest needs to be organised in the sense that everyone just carries on as they are now, currrently taxed to oblivion anyway and just ignores this stupid hike in tax.

 as if we dont pay enough anyway!!

Yeah, does that mean that I'm going to get a fine for having that TR6.5 in my garage although it's been off the road before SORN was introduced? and you for having that Renault & Spitfire?

If they think they'll get away with that one, they know what they can do, they can lick my rectum!

Ill keep saying it but if we were a nation that stood up for ourselves they wouldnt introduce these taxes etc

If anyone here has an old paper driving licence then FFS keep it. The new photocard licence is now suddenly only valid for 10 years, after that YOU have to cough up again for a new one at a NEW price. I wonder how much that will be in 10 years.

Time to leave the country methinks. Shite weather eating our cars, shite government taking our already shite wages to give to some chav & his bird up the duff, shite working conditions, shite Head of Police. Hey, I'm on a roll!!

keep going mate your speaking my wave length Im tuned in
