For those that dont know, Richard Brunstrom is the top cop in the Association of Chief Police Officers.

He has always been an avid supporter of speed cameras, even calling for zero tolerance cameras only a few months ago. He is widely regarded as an over-zealous camera nazi.

If this article is correct, he has now admitted what alot of us have known for along time, speed cameras dont work!

I think he should now resign.

NO MORE SPEED CAMERAS SAYS TOP COP

Mar 13 2005

Exclusive By Andrew Baxter

BRITAIN's top traffic cop is calling for a halt on any more speed cameras insisting: "Enough's enough."

Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom has made the amazing U-turn after admitting that the policy is failing to end the carnage on the roads.

"We have 6,000 cameras in the UK covering every identifiable hotspot, yet road deaths have gone up," said Mr Brunstrom, head of road policing at the Association of Chief Police Officers.

"We can't keep on going until there is a camera on each lamppost. We've got to stop somewhere."

The ACPO wants to double the number of cameras to 12,000, but Mr Brunstrom called for a rethink after latest figures showed 3,508 died on our roads in 2003 - the highest figure since 1997. And last year deaths and serious injuries actually increased at one camera site in seven, even though 2.2millon drivers were fined and had three points put on their licence.

Mr Brunstrom wants a softly-softly approach with vehicle-activated signs warning drivers to slow down.

"When we look at deaths on the roads we discover we're dreadfully out of step," he said. "We want to create a culture where cameras are friends." The transport lab TRL found the vehicle-activated signs, which cost £5,000 each, led to a 7mph fall in average speeds along with a 34 per cent reduction in accidents.

This compares with a 3.7mph cut in speeds and 14 per cent reduction in accidents where speed cameras costing £30,000 are installed.

expect the withdrawal of visible cameras, a change in the law and new cameras in road furniture and cats eyes! Or at least thats what he said in his conference in Brighton last week.

cameras in cats eyes can be easily vandalized :D

or just get chrisC to drive down the middle of the white line and all his leaky fluids will get them all

Well, if as seems to be the case, the guy has got the gonads to put his hands up and say he was wrong, I have to put a "well done that man" on him, most of his ilk would carry on despite knowing they were in the wrong to save face

Technically that is possible but with cameras in the cats eyes, it will be very hard to prove.

For starters, cameras now are human operated or have 2 pictures taken so you can see the distance traveled between the 2 exposures.

With a cats eye camera there will be no visual reference as every picture will be from the ground looking up at the car. It will be near impossible to tell how far the car traveled between the 2.

Plus with these "cat's eye cameras" there will need to be wiring to power and going under the road. I doubt the council will put up with the police digging up every other road.

I suppose they could use high powered RFID technology which can power a small remote circuit without wires. One cat's eye could house the laser transmitter/receiver (or they could measure the speed with two inductive loops further down the road) and the other could house the camera but I really doubt it's likely because there would be no way of keeping the lens clean especially when my wheels are leaving a nice layer of rubber on the fookers!

I have the same opinion jock, normally! But lets remember it wasn't long ago he wanted zero tolerance, 31 in a 30 and you're nicked, and probably still does. Hate to say it but a leopard doesn't change it's spots.

There's nothing I'd like to see more than his resignation, it's too serious a matter for him to be given a second chance, twist the knife and get rid I say. He deserves it.

Gotta agree, after all isnt this the same guy who said "Theres no difference between drifting a couple of miles an hour over the speed limit, and 'drifting' a knife into sombody..."

Get shut, he's a two faced c0ck-nobbler!

Have to say I do slow down for the warning signs that light up as they are usually placed at dangerous spots for a reason, unlike the speed cameras that are placed on roads with the most speeders!

People are usually over the speed limit in these places because the speed limit is too low for the conditions in the first place.

We are not allowed to use our judgement anymore and will soon all need a personal police escort to drive anywhere.

I haven't been stopped for speeding in years now, mostly because i know where all the cameras are in my area and have a Snooper anyway.

The only times i've ever had a ticket in my life it's been from a roadside cop hiding behind a tree with a radar gun and I haven't seen one in the whole of Yorkshire in a good 5 years! :D

If they want to replace expensive traffic cops with cameras I'm not sure i can complain ;)

P.S Mr G Pants, my only leaking fluids are now out of the exhaust to reduce camera evidence even further :D
