so my car passed the MOT first time last week.

Last night, I was driving home and a couple of miles from my house I heard what sounded like a helicopter blade noise (whum-whum-whum) that increased and decreased with my speed, and the whole rear started buzzing/rattling with resonance. I pulled over and did a check of the obvious (in the dark) and couldn't see anything wrong, so I nursed it home.

This morning it occured to me to check the wheel nuts and I was shocked to find that, on the rear wheels, 3 of 5 bolts had sheared off completely on the nearside and 2 were loose on the offside. This after having had new tyres fitted only 3 weeks ago.

I consider myself lucky to still be here to write this. So if any of you hear this type of noise, you know what to check.

This is known issue, Nissan parts supplier mentioned it a couple of years ago ( I POSTED IT ON HERE THEN) that they had seen a rise in this kind of stud failure (based on new stud purchases) with both the 200sx and predominantly the 300zx oddly the UK cars seem to suffer it worse (???) and the back wheels studs are a more common failure.(?)

Yep!

Jeez, you learn somet new everyday!! :(

Glad your OK mate, sh1t that could have been bad!!

correct me if I'm wrong , but after the wheels have been off shouldn't you re-tighten them after 50 miles or so. Think it says it on the bottom of the bill.

funny you mention this. A few days ago I developed a vibration at the rear around 120 (having had a local garage do some suspension work). Took my rears off today for the slicks at the pod and put them back on myself afterwards, strangely enough the vibration has gone!! Amazing the difference torquing the wheel nuts make.

Speeds are in kmh obviously:D
