Have recently seen quite a few starter motors which have only one bolt in them, in one case the support fram around the motor had snapped at the point where it sits over the stud, causing the motor to drop out of the bell housing.

I dont know if this is an issue thats been noticed before, but when I put mine back in a touch of thread lock will be involved.

Same sort of problem here.................

Recently my starter motor was replaced and upon refitting one of the bolts wouldn't bite so a slightly oversized bolt was used - this went in and tightened up a treat.

Me too.

Go for the American thread.

Coarser than metric but not as sore as a Whitworth !!

Run the hole through 23/64 and it will self cut !!!

Alan.....

could this kind of thing lead to it making an awful grinding noise every now and again when starting up?

indeed it can Clarkey, that was the exact symptoms I had about 2 years ago and it turn out part of the housing was threaded allowing the starter motor to work loose.
