Anyone taken on board an "unknown" car (like I just have) and decided to **overhaul** using some sort of priority schedule?

 

I have no history for it and it drives well, straight and starts/runs/brakes without any fuss. Fuel lines I think are going to be a problem - switching on the aircon when engines cold first thing creates a bit of a stink in the cabin...

 

I'm going to sort out the fuel lines first so it doesn't become an expensive firework, but then where to next?

1st reg from Japan with 96000 km - so I guess the 60K service wasn't done...should I go the whole hog and do the full monty and spend "up front" or should I wait and hit things as the "show up" ?

 

Is there something I absolutely MUST do (belts?)....

I would say 1st thing is to get the fuel lines sorted, then get the 60K service done (belts) which will take care of most other things or it will show them up for you.

Change the plugs, Oil and filters :D Then have a bloody good check around most of the other things Brake, discs pads and so on.

welcome to the world of ZX ownership and by the way SWB NA - top choice (manual or auto??)

 

Good idea to get a cambelt service,oil+filter change + all other filters and fluids.

I would also get the steering/brake/suspension components all checked along with the tyres (preferably off the car)

 

The fuel line smell is a common problem - try tightening all the connectors on the fuel lines in the engine bay first - cured the problem for me.

 

Other common problems that you may encounter:

Non functioning clock

Dodgy glovebox latch

Electric aerial that doesn't fully retract

Seatbelts slow to retract

Worn bolster on the drivers seat

 

I use my SWB, NA, manual as a daily driver and so far so good - get 23mpg and still plenty of performance

 

Oh, and the most important thing - what colour is it??? Blue ones are best!!!!!

Ta for the input - I've booked it in for Fuel Lines and a "once-over"...then 60K service in a couple of weeks.....It's an auto btw and in boring silver but that might change ;) I'll post an update and let ye know if the new lines stop the cabin petrol smell with some pics too maybe...

Me again....just had car in with dealer to look for problems with fuel lines - nothing found?! Anyone else have a similar smell that had no apparent root cause? It is only on startup for about 10 mins from cold - then all is well...I guess I can live with it if it's a character trait on the Z's...Dealer is sending me service schedule info and prices - I'll let ye all know the damage of a 60K service from a Nissan Dealer in Ireland ;)

It can be a pain to find,but would say at this stage its a very small leak,but will get worse,trust me!,take off centre cover(over throttle/cruise pullys)at rear will see fuel lines running from fuel regulator(looks same as object on the left but thats the fuel damper)start it up and check out these pipes,get your fingers under neath the clips etc,look for damp/wet etc,check all the way from the fuel filter,you will see in pic that i have sorted mine with Smithy's braided fuel line kit,highly recomended mate,and easy to fit,i have had 4 Zs and have had leaks from 3,one was real bad,flooding out near regulator,and i had one where the fuel regulator itself went bad with a leak,very rare tho that one,you may not find the leak straight off but stay with it,its there somewhere,good luck ,Tony

u need to make sure all the surclips are fully tightened up mate , i had the same and replaced with smithys kit then smell came back , tightened all hoses again and now its gone. Especially the fuel dampener ones ;)

not too sure what area u are in mate , but its well worth taking it to a 300zx specialist rather than a nissan dealers as they dont know their ass from their elbows in most of em !!! Plus they will rip u right off !!

Hi, where abouts in ireland do you live, i live in n.ireland and got a jaguar specialist to do the 60k service for me and he did a great job at a reasonable cost. i asked the main dealer but they where very expensive and had no experience with a 300zx

I'm down south - but would travel for the right price - have some friends in Belfast I'd happily stay with - The dealer here still hasn't got me prices yet, but I'd be grateful for your guys name so I could price up the work with them too?
