The car now runs 6 degrees cooler I suppose when you have a nasty thin aircon rad blocking your coolant flow then it will run cooler,In anycase who needs aircon in the UK,all it does is reduce bhp and use more fuel  ;)

Mac, I think I've untangled what I thought I meant. You said your car ran 6 deg cooler after ditching the aircon. WillieO said that couldn't happen because the thermostat would wait until the temp got up to the old temp. You said what would happen if the airflow would get restricted and, of course we agree the temp would go sky high.

So I think the point is that the thermostat governs the min running temp of the engine (with or without aircon) so we don't understand why your car would suddenly run 6 deg cooler without changing the thermostat.

OTOH, restricting the airflow (by aircon or cardboard), the max running temp of the engine would be higher.

I think. :D memo don't get into engineering arguments when pissed :duffer:

Gio I have got some expert advice on this afraid you and Willio are both wrong! Increasing flow to the rad will reduce the temp and it has absolutely nothing to do with the thermostat :mac1:

However I all ready knew that as my temp dropped:D;)

i junked mine ages ago - and it deffinatly frees up power on the NA

like you say - who needs air con in the UK and with a targa

Peeps with hair :hyper:

Just like to mention that when peter at Niztek (SE or wot ever you call it), installs a thermostat into a modified engine he drills 2 extra 3mm holes in the outer edge of the thermostat, so in total you now have 3 3mm holes (there is 1 in there as standard), so your engine will run slightly cooler, because there is an increase in water flow when the thermostat is closed.

Especially exquisitely coiffured bouffants.

And people with functioning ears - I can't beleive the 300 is so rubbish on the motorway with the targas off.

aha!

So a standard thermostat won't let the engine run cooler than the temp at which the thermostat opens - but a peter/Nisstek thermostat will 'cos it's been modded.

So true - anything over 80 with targas out is not comfortable so I've not tried above 100 yet.....

I don't care about the engine cooling or performance stats, I don't want to overheat myself so the air-con stays put thank you very much.

I would not have a car, ANY car without it now, UK summers are too humid and sticky. Even a targa or full convertible is no substitute for good old a/c

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Richard :D

I did 120 with tops off and it was a bit blowy.

Can you just cut the belt that drives the air con compressor to see if the power is any different .So if it is not just replace the belt or if it better then go the whole way and remove the air con altogether

To be honest i am not much in favour of the aircon on a Z,couple years back sitting in traffic on a very hot day Z water temp gets way hot,was worried to say least, turnend off air con and the temp went down to a less worrying level, since then no confidence, and every summer we get stories on here of "my temp gauge just went off scale",and i have met a few at meets etc that have had same as me,on a number of times the aircon was on,in fact i tried a test with my last Z,i used Red Line water wetter and the temp still went up with air con on while in traffic,so that was the nail in the coffin for it,i would rather have peace of mind with it removed, more air flow to the rad, less for the crank pully to move, not saying everyone has this trouble of course,as we all know that two Zs are never the same and one will perform ok another not.

Tony :)

That's probably more that if it's set on cold then you are taking no hot air from the system into the cabin. If your car starts to overheat the best way to minimise it is to put the heater on hot full blast and the temp will drop quite a bit - it's like having a second rad in the cabin pulling off heat.

And yes the ECU does switch off the aircon anyway when you floor it. On an auto you can see the Power light come on while it goes into hyperspace LOL

Its the engineer in me trying to get out

I don't like the sound of that! :nelson: :x:
