My missus has been driving the zed around for the last week, and she mentioned on monday that the oil pressure guage is down near the zero most of the time.

I checked the oil and saw it was a little low, so filled it back to 3/4 full..

started the car and everything sounded nice.. the guage was reading somewhere between the 5 and 9 (jap car).

Thought ok... just low oil

however, she said again yesterday the car was back down at about 1 or 2 when she was driving and sometimes stopped at zero when she was stationary.

I checked the oil again last night and all looked fine... still about 3/4 on the ol' stick..

So I took the car into work myself the morning and she is right.

When I first start the car in the morning, the guage springs nicely up to the 5-9 "norm", but no more than half a mile later, its almost reading zero.

confused, when I got to work, I checked for blue smoke etc from the rear and got nothing (pale white smoke only..) and also checked in the bay for any obvious oil leaks etc and still nothing.

Took off the oil cap and looked for "mayonaising" and also checked the oil level. Both appeared fine...

This is where my "techincal knowledge" runs out, so I phoned a mate at a garage to see if he could take a look - no answer so I decided to take the journey anyways...

So I get about a mile into the journey and notice the engine check like flickering on every now and again. I Pull over and stop the car.. wait a while and restarted it.. the light was off.. I continued and not more than 2 more miles into the journey the light's flicking on and off again.

So I pull off the parkway and decide to take the rest of the journey at sub 40mph. As I do so, I come to a stop at a roundabout and can hear a ticking noise from the engine bay.

After opening the window to hear clearer, I realise I am now getting a loud(ish) sharp mentallic tapping noise comming from the engine bay.

Some (possibly stupid) tests later, I found the noise is always present, but loudest when the car is at a constant 2500rpm and fades out as the rpm approaches 3500, being almost inaudible at 4000...

Also, when accelerating quickly the sound is quite quiet, as appose to slowing accelerating, where it is scarily loud.

So, anyone want to guess at what I've broken?

(and how much it should cost to fix - approximately?)

((AND what may have caused it?))

Being completely honest, I tend to drive the car quickly - lots of acceleration etc, but only after its warmed up and never redline it.

I'm a little upset because up till now, I've really been enjoying the Zed and its quirks... and I cant bear to see it injured

do you reckon I've done any "permenant damage"?

:(

Broken VTC springs in the end of the intake cam will cause this ;) Oil pressure falling off is more than likely the sender itself rather than low oil pressure. Best check is to get a proper gauge in place of the sender and check the o/p....

Springs cost bugger all to replace, labour will be about 1.5 hours...

I'm off to Z-Tech (fingers crossed) this weekend, but I would prefer if someone can confirm this is my problem before then...

Is there an "easy" way to tell if that's the cause?

Nope - only way is to replace them and see if it cures it. If the noise is still there then its either little ends or a spun shell :( Fingers crossed for you....

i take it little ends or a spun shell??? are bad and expensive things?

Yep - bearings in either ends of the conrods... Looking at minimum at a strip and rebuild, possibly with new crank if its a spun shell...

Don't panic yet though ;)

ok so the next question is... do you know where I can get this done?

I'm going to the states on the 26th for a few weeks, so if I need a rebuild.. theres the ideal time....

and also, how much am I looking at for:

A: replacing the springs

B: engine rebuild

They say anything to calm you down!

Cry now, get it over with and get on with the rest of your life, My z was a special development:- lotus nissan 300 zx. (lots of trouble usually serious).

Sorry just a laugh :nono: :mac1:

I am on the verge lol..

Nothing but bad luck since I bought the car.... where's my evo gone.. come back... all is forgiven...

Sk93 or can we call you SK...Listen to Duffers, don't panic. get the car to him or equivalent 300 techie and get it checked. The engines on these things are quite robust.

Chris

If its any consolation, you dont hear of many Engine problems on here, its normally Turbo, gearbox that kind of thing.

Listen to duffers, he seems to offer some of the best advice on here.....

And get used to not driving e Zed for long periods of time. I am now mate, I havent drove her for 5 months, she's been sitting in the father-in-laws garage waiting for a 5-speed box. I was just about to put my auto one back in this weekend and then last night, a 5 speed box came along! :D

Stick with this site mate and you'll get through any problem. FACT.. :)

Fist off the oil guages on these are pants-like Andy says get a decent gauge

and check the oil pressure. If the lights flickering it could be worth a consult to see if it throws owt up!-You sure the missus ain,t put crappy fuel in and it,s detting?? ;)

Agree with Duff here , we seem to be having a massive amount of cars in with damaged big end bearings at the moment usually due to very low oil , depending on how bad they are damaged you tend to here them most at about 2k if you can here them beyond that then you have really fooked one or more or as duff has said spun a bearing

As I'm down with you this weekend, perhaps you could pass your expert ear over the engine?
