Most Common Places a Z32 Leak (Engine oil/coolant/transmission/Powersteering)

I want to get some idea of the most common place's Z32's can lose there engine Oil/Powersteering/Transmission/Coolant.

Remember all cars have different places some the same but many still unique...

So please post where your Zed leaked and what was involved in rectifying the leak ie: cost of parts, labour, your own time,Damage caused,Whether you brokedown.

By posting your leaks would Also help others by giving Them some guidance into rectifying there leaks, and we've all had leaks of some kind either Big or small....

Cheers... :headvswal :)

Back of engine the 2 small pipe that go into the heater matrix

fixed by undoing jublee clip, pushing pipe on further and then doing clip back up but on otherside of hole. Looks to much of a bugger to replace hoses anyway.

the only leaks iv had are rear gearbox seal (very minor, done it when i had the box out to fit my clutch) & diff pinion seal (quite bad leak)

Thanks for the replies Guys but i am sure there are more than that.

This thread cant help others including myself if no-body else replies to this post....

Theres must be more....surely?????

The only leaks I have had are

Gearbox seal leaking water.

2 little rad hoses on the alloy rad pipe leaking.

ANYWHERE there is a join or pipe is a potential place for leaking.

The rubber seals in my master brake cylinder started leaking, very scary when you have no brakes at 80mph

rear engine seal has been replaced, and also my water pump, water pump can be common if not replaced when it should be

sorry to interupt but did the leak try and fool into thinking it was coming from the plug in the bottom of the box????

Little water pipes to the turbos (creates steam after engine turned off from the back of the engine) - rectified by the Baggins Bypass

ive got an oil leak, it forms a small puddle on the alloy pipe (stat housing?, front above water pump) seems to leak oil from the r/h ex cam pulley, ive had the engine out, replaced the cam seals & resealed the r/covers & lots more!, still leaks & allways has  every one says r/cover & through experiance with the 300's, their prob right, but if any one seen it with the cam covers removed, i'm sure they would say cam seal (replaced twice!), heres my post; http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=43117&highlight=oil+leak :)

Sorry Mate Looks like your link has Expired.... :)

ive got an hi-cas leak, but cant see where its coming from?

looks like one of the pipes or joints somewhere amongst the mass of pipes below main hi-cas unit

dont want to start stripping it down, cos i dont know where to get the pipes from or which one to ask for.

cant get the car off the floor to have a good look ???

I had a HICAS leak - one of the pipes that run underneath towards the rear had corroded and split (on mine they run up the near side and are under a plastic cover). I just used a hax saw to cut the corroded section away (about an inch) and patched it with a couple of jubilee clips and some fuel line. Maybe not the best fix but did the job.

Also had brake master cylinder leak. Same as MikeGroves. Cost £50 for a new piston kit. Easy to replace though.

Also got a fuel tank leak (apparently the breather pipes are not connected properly?? But will find out when I take the tank off in the summer).

And a clutch leak. Not fixed this yet (leaks very little). Replaced the slave cylinder already so I gues it's the pipe between the master and slave cylinder or perhaps the piston seals as for the brake master cylinder.

Plus the oil leaks from somewhere too...ah well.

Had a leak a few weeks back which created steam rising at the back of the engine .Couldn't see a thing from the top, so got it in the air and could just see a water pipe about 4" long(straight pipe) ,had ballooned and under pressure was leaking causing plenty of steam.Didn't seem any easy way to get at it ,so dropped the box which made it simple to get at, and seemed a good time to replace clutch & fit them lovely decat pipes off ebay. Not sure what the pipe was but what a Bast**d for a 4" pipe.About a days work between regular coffee breaks at a very leisurely pace.

I had 5 rotten through engine core plugs which nearly resulted in seizing my engine....

Started only after flushing and refiling cooling system which antifreeze after i serviced the Zed...

Drove down to Exeter from Southampton and on the way back just after midnight engine started to overheat and would you belive it coolant was pi***ng out everywhere....AA came and said it was a core/freeze plug with a hole approx 1mm through and it was behind engine mount drivers side....

So next few days got underneath raised and supported engine, dropped mount and removed old one, replaced with new one which from nissan UK was around 78p plus vat...Refilled system drove down road and another water leak.....Same thing another core plug???? Yes 3 more!!! nearly had to remove engine....But managed to just drop the auto box do 2 behind flywheel and one behind aircon pump and while i had it in the air 1 more near pass turbo.....

3,000miles + no probs....Time involved 4 days -morning till dark and £38parts including rear main oil seal....

i Also have a minor Powersteering leak and engine oil leak both very minor but making a mess of my subframe....... :( :)

Sounds like you had it pretty rough mate.Thought mine was a bast**d but luckily enough mines running sweet.Dont get me wrong I've shelled some money out in the last 6 months, new shocks all round ,apexi dump valves, some cracking decat pipes, front discs & pads +rear pads ,front tyres, clutch and paintless dent removal a few days ago after some to**er nudged my door.At least now she should be sweet for the summer .Hope you carry on trouble free.

I hope so too.... :)

I also have shed out loads in the last few months, hopefully i will still be able to have a holiday abroad this year as i shed so much out last year i didnt leave myself enough time to save for one.. :( :)

Master cylinder failed two months after I bought the car, waterpump failed two years later, these were the only faults I had on the car untill I decided to restore it, now I have had the engine fitted twice and each time a fooking oil leak, first time it was from the cam covers, this time I dont know yet but it drips from the back of the crank pulley, we changed the front oil seal and its still the same, its just a constant drip every two seconds, the whole underneath of the car is covered in oil and the back of the car gets black and greasy from the oil, as I do a mororway drive twice a day, the turbulence under the car seems to suck it to the back end- sick to death of it.

Sounds like the sump gasket may be leaking

...... :(

Or you have worn a ridge in the crank pulley ,causing it to leak still even with a new seal......???

  • 2 weeks later...

Thought I best mention that my fix for HICAS (mentioned above) burst on the way home last night!! Dumped all the fluid in the road and I lost power steering! So my quick fix didn't 'do the job' after all (when will I learn not to be a bodger!). Will do it properly over the weekend with some new pipe and a flare kit.

Yeh, thanks Zmaster, but it cant be the sump, it seems to be running down from higher up, as for the crank being marked, yeh I thought that myself, but there doesnt seem to be any oil around the inside casing when you take the timing cover off, looks like it is running down possibly from the front of the rocker.
