Mobil1 Oil Changes

Hi,

does using Mobil One 15-50 mean you leave it longer to change the oil or do you still have to stick to the stipulated intervals, any ideas.

I change mine at 3000m intervals, but then I do mostly short-ish journeys (

Think of it as cheap engine and turbo insurance.

I assume that you are using Mobil Motorsport 15w50 which is what I have in at the mo'.

It's rare that you will find anyone in here that changes their oil any later than every 4000 miles.

I'm in the process of the doing 3 changes at every 1000 so that I can get rid of any carbon that has built up over time. I don't trust these engine flushes - you never know what they are doing when they are in there and there is no gaurantee that any residue that is left behind, isn't causing long term damage.

After my 3 1000mile chages I am going to stick to every 3000 miles or 3 months.

If you have any leaks on your turbo, it would be wise to go for a slightly thicker oil which is what I am going to change to. Something like Magnatec SS 10w50.

THERES NO SUBSTITUTE FOR GOOD QUALITY CLEAN OIL!

Unless I'm being a complete dunce here..

10w50 is *thinner* than 15w50 (when cold)...

Hi ya Mark!

My suggestion is to *always* change your oil every 3k miles. The way I look at it is money in the bank. If you don't change it on time all sorts of *expensive* things can (and invariably will) go wrong with the car that could have been prevented by a cheap oil change.

As for the type of oil to use, Magnatec 10W40 is excellent (use it myself) or a slightly heavier 15W50 can also be used. I wouldn't recommend going any thinner than a 15W30 in light of the age of our cars (and seals that can be affected).

Oh and another thing, if you're changing the oil yourself make sure you get the propper Nissan OE filter and sump plug washer - the stuff you get at Halfords doesn't fit (regardless of what their books say). 4.5L of oil in total (i.e., 4L in the car, 0.5L in the filter).

Good luck mate!

I was led to believe that although 10w50 is thinner than 15w50, SS has a slightly different consistancy to FS.

Is this not right?

Ahh.. Hmm... I dunno smile.gif I was merely going by the numbers... Sorry for any confusion caused smile.gif

The W values on oil cans are Watts, and are the energies the oil requires for 1 litre to cross 1 meter of polished metal when cold and at operating temperatures. The higher the Wattage eg 50W, the stickier and thicker the oil. So 10W-50 is less runny and sticky, and therefore not as good as 15W-50, which sticks to your engine parts and turbos better.

Hope this helps.

Nuff said

For my highway driving ('bout 1500 week)

Mobil 1 0W40 for years

Motorex 5W40 now ('bout one year)

One "engine Flush" every 2 oil change

Oil filter change with every "engine flush"

Change oil every 10.000-15.000 km (that's 6000 - 10000 miles)

No wear shown on internals, turbos still spinning like new.

Add one cup of ATF DEXTRON III into the engine oil when that stupid lifter ticking comes (in fact, now, I always do it, just in case).

For "track days"

Mandatory Oil change BEFORE

Mandatory engine flush / filter flush AFTER

Mandatory brake fluid bleeding as well (I love speed bleeders), and check (in fact..change) brake pads

And, BTW, almost ALL of the tear and wear is occuring on a engine during STARTUP (first 30 secs)...People who beleive that "thicker" is better....do not understand that, nor fluid dynamics (thicker = harder to push = higher oil pressure / thinner = easier to push = better flow = more lubrication and heat exchange).

But heck, what do I know...I only have 3 reliable TT cars (with about 200.000 km on them / 120.000 on the dodge).

And speaking of oil, I bought 200 liters (one barril) of REAL GOOD one (the motorex), that cut the price in half....thing about it.. Anyone thinking about an OIL group buy ?

Zee you

Henri

Wow, you get no smoking with the 0w40 Henri? I'm impressed - those must be some well cared for turbos smile.gif

That's the only reason I wouldn't run a 0w oil - I *know* my turbo's would start smoking like gooduns.. (OK I don't *know*.. But I'd put money on it.. perhaps I'll try it next time round - I've always run Mobil 1 0w40 in the Renault)..

Az

I use 5-40 Harry's own Fully synthetic, have done for years it's up to all the latest ratings, its SJ at the mo, isn't it?

Haver tried all sorts - Hated Magnatec, dropped Oil pressure through the floor on my old ride.

I change oil and filter every 6000mls and my turbos don't smoke, or only the very occasional puff smile.gif

Regular fluid and filter changes with good oil is the key whichever way you look at it.

Tim

It's gonna depend how and where you drive :-

Lots of stop/start town driving, frequent cold starts, short journeys - change it more.

Lots of nice long motorway blasts, change it less.

For me every 3000 is OK. Warren is paranoid wink.gif and does every 1500/1000, but it isn't his daily use car, so when it is used it's used hard. You need to decide what's best for you.

BTW I also have a dirty great magnet stuck to my oil filter to catch all the bits of graunched up steel that floats around engines. I would recommend that everybody considers something similar.

I have been on 0w40 mobil1 for years too... so far so good... I'll probably upgrade to Redline in the future...

3000-3500miles is when I do my changes

How do you guys read this then....

A chap at my local NISSAN dealer (Bob Julier, Brierly Hill) told me to use 10W40 mineral oil. He also said that the oil NISSAN sell was probably something like TEXACO, but with a NISSAN badge.

What's going on? Surely mineral oil isn't as good as synthetic????

Have taken out the SE installed Castrol R/S 0/40 and replaced with Redline 10/30

Change more often than my underpantz hehe

Start the car and leave to warm and then take real slow. Fark in hell I treat my Zed better than any human being I know hehe wink.gif

I use full synth oil every 5,000 miles. Its a nice round number to go on and within Nissans recomendations
