NZR - What would be involved in......

.....putting power steering on a D reg Sierra. The grandfather has hit a bit of a downwards slope over the past 3 months and is not as strong as he once was.

He says that he now struggles to turn the wheel and to be fair to him, I have tried to turn the wheel on his Ford and although its easy for me, I can see how he would have difficulty.

He has asked me if it would be easy to get power steering put on it and I was wondering if you guys new if it was as easy as just changing the rack, sticking the piping in and attaching the motor courtesy of a belt.

I would have thought it would be easier and cheaper to go buy an equivalent car with PS unless you have a lot of time on your hands. A D reg Sierra can't be worth much.

He hasn't had the car that long but got it for a very good deal.

It has less than 80K genuine on the clock and the body is in near perfect condition. I didn't believe him when he told me how good the condition of it was, till I saw it for myself.

Sierra are USUALLY not to difficult to work on...right?

I would have thought that if you're determined to go this route all the bits needed would be cheaply available from a breakers. Power steering is a self contained system in itself.

I tend to go with Andy on this, unless your GDs Sierra is a minta, get a new set of wheels with PS already fitted.

I'm also with Andy on this one.. You've got to get;

PS pump, belts, brackets, rack, hoses. The column could even be different (it's been known). There could be differences in the suspension setup (I know for a fact that on Renaults, the suspension turrets bolt into different holes depending on PS/nonPS setups)..

If he got *that* good a deal on a total minter of a car, then you can probably sell if for more than he bought it for, and get a smaller car with PS on it..
