Nissan Almera Engine fault.....can someone help?

Hi,

 

My mate has a 2001 Almera (1.5l). The yellow engine warning light is on the dash and engine cuts off every 2-3miles. Seems better is he goes under 40mph.

 

Any ideas?

    egr valve sticking is my best guess...thats if it has one which i'm sure it would...just sounds similar to a prob i once had
