I took the Z off the road last summer to fit a new interior, new sound system and a few bits of bling in the engine bay. I had the cam belt changed when I got the car, but as I was not a member of this board back then and I didn't know to change the water pump etc too. I've got a new water pump and was most of the way through stripping the old one off when I got stuck on removing the crank pulley to get the bottom cam cover off.

Got let down by many 'expert mechanic' mates, and here I am 6 months later with it still off the road.

I can't stand being without my Z for much longer. Getting withrawl symptoms and mild psychosis (Hmmmm...that Rover 75 is a FINE looking vehicle :headvswal )

I've looked through and done a search for how to get the pulley off, but the ones I've read seem to get a bit vague (or have no pics) of the critical part of the operation.

I've got the rad and fan out and all the belts are off, but please, how the feck do you secure/wedge the pulley, and which way does the nut turn to get it off??!?!?

(please bear in mind that I am doing this on my drive at home.I do have axle stands but I don't have a compressed air system - or a gas axe!)

Any help MUCH apreciated, and then I might even be able to meet up with some of you guys at a South East meet!

Cheers!

Neil (no, not that one, another one!)

If its a manual put her in gear and get a big bar on the bolt and turn it anti-clockwise. If shes an auto then remove the starter and wedge a screwdriver in the ringgear to lock it.

If you need a hand just drop me a line, I dont think you are that far from me if you need a hand.

Mat

Thanks for that, I'll have a go and if I fail I'll give you a shout. :) (yes, it's an auto BTW)

Hmmm.....familiar pic of a Z with a veilside front end in your sig. Looks better with the light 'bursts' ;)

When I did mine (auto) my dad gave me a hand and sugested that we brace a length of wood (soft, won't damage anything) against the pulley and, using a bar on your 27mm socket, belt it with a few good hits of a hammer/mallet and hay-presto!!! it worked :D (normal handed screw thread)

Neil you've been a member since Summer 2002 not 2003 lol

Yup. I'm a lazy fecker! Got the car December 2001 (having destroyed my previous grey Z in an accident) and had the cam belt changed immediately. Drove it aound lots and was very happy. Then I started to get LOTS of water leaks. I changed loads of hoses (including turbo ones) but the last thing it can be is the water pump (unless it's the head gasket - but I don't even want to think about that!)
