This is getting annoying now...

Hi guys,

Just got Z back from mechanic again, he changed the oil, fuel filter, battery etc and checked the timing on the CAS, he reported that it is 15. BTC which, I gather, is what it should be.

The problem is the car is still slower than usual, and is quite slow to rev up (especially up top from about 4500 up) the boost guage (crap standard one) is reading fine up to about 10psi, so I dont think that it's safety boost.

How do I check the timing belt (which was replaced recently) to ensure that it's set properly? does anyone have an idea as to what else it could be?

As always, thanks for all your help,

Brian

Now then , here's one thing to check with your mechanic.Ask him if he set the timing with the timing light clamp fully around the black loop wire on the igniter module and if so he will have got an incorrect reading, usually double as his timing light picks up both signals from no 1 and no6 cylinder. tell hin to try putting the timing gun clamp closed and near the loop until he gets the timing light flashing then check his reading hopefully he would get something like 0 degrees now hence the sluggishness.

Thanks for your help, will ask him and will let you know how I get on.

Cheers,

Brian

Check the position of the CAS.

If it's completely turned (anti)clockwise, the belt is incorrectly installed, and you MUST not drive the car in this condition

Zee you

I am getting a little concerned here as there is so many views on the timing and and cam belt issue that there is a danger some one may misinterperate some of the info here and on other posts and do some damage.

I hope I can explain clearly here, but first Brian I would take an educated guess and say your timing is ok, as unless some one actually turns the cas unit from its preset position it can not change. Also if it was as far out as 0 deg btc this means no 1 plug fires at exactly top dead centre, given the piston / crank / valve momentum and small firing angle that would give you, the combustion burn would be so poor that the cat sensors would heat up and the warning light would come on.Also having changed many cam belts at no stage do you need or have to move the cas,if in fact the belt is fitted incorrectly (cams misaligned) it is valve timing that is effected more. The effect is partially open valves on firing so low power and soon burnt out valves.

God sorry to go on guys but as to your loss of power take a less complicated view first, have you changed wher you fill up? not all petrol is the same, make a good scan of the engine for loose or disconnected pipes /cables. blocked air filters can reduce power as can a blocked or disintergrating exhaust box (take a look for any bashes of the boxes..very common as so low ) plugs and tb cleaning all basic stuff really, it is so easy to think complicated because you assume its got to be.Let me know how you get on and if ever in the midlands you are most welcome to drop in for a quick look and choccy bic bics Jeff TT

Well,

there are so many things it could be... has the car ran through a consult test yet, done the usual checking error codes?

There are so many vacum pipes, connectors(coils, temp and Throttle position etc) to check...

...where are you, maybe it's a good idea to try and meet someone on the forum with some experiance to take a look?

Brian, Head for Belfast one of these days, and I will have a look for you, I am no expert but I have had mine for 4 years and I know a good bit, also I have all the bits you might need in stockm if any thing is bust! Call me any time or E-Mail me!!!!

Thanks guys! I have owned a lot of sports cars and subsequently have been on a lot of forums and never have I met such a friendly and helpful group as you lot (with the exception of porker the ballbag). In fact, considering the amount of trouble I have had with my Z, I don't think I'd still have it if it wasn't for this forum.

I have reset the ecu on the car, and resultantly the car is almost back to its old self....(beat my dad in the Lexus in a rematch yesterday, he's not a happy camper wink.gif )I'll take a good look at the fuel lines etc when it stops raining and will let you know how I get on, if no joy, put the kettle on B12Andy, I'll be going to Belfast!.

Cheers,

Brian

(P.S thanks Jeff T.T for your help, I very much appreciate it.)
